Double Bass First came the UpShot, then DoubleShot - now Coda Evolution

Just stumbled into this page at Gollihur:

Looks like the bastard love child of the upshot and doubleshot. Can't wait to hear the first real-world reviews.

Cool, but... It's the same size and just 2lbs lighter than the Doubleshot. Seems like for an extra 100$ you get a lot more with the Doubleshot. Maybe the bigger cab with the single woofer gives better lows though?

Same size cab. Shorter, and lighter, though, than the DS. Upfiring woofer. Basically, it's like a taller Upshot with the added 5" mid/high driver. Definitely sounds bigger and deeper than the Upshot. Not as volume-capable as the Doubleshot, as you might expect, but surprisingly potent.

As for bags, ALL of the carry bags/backpacks have been essentially discontinued; they were made by Mooradian, and Mooradian, as you likely know, has been shuttered (retirement). However, Rick and I have tested and sourced options to replace them that are cheaper and pretty readily available; a few drum bags in various sizes to suit the rigs. Working on providing that information on the site.

Mark,

I'm glad to see that there is now a way to keep the head docked with the cabinet, which was what bugged me about the Shot cabs.

I would be very hesitant to buy one of these new Codas without a properly fitted bag. I was at the Mooradian plant not long before they closed having some last-chance repairs made to a DB bag and I was wondering what AI would do once the doors shut.

I hope AI is able to find another good bag supplier. I have one of the old hard cases for my Coda sIII and still prefer that for transport over a bag, honestly.

Are the non SL Clarus heads going away? I see that the only combos listed are with SL heads.

Nope - I have to update the products to reflect the option for the Clarus head. One of many things on a long to-do list...

I don't think A.I. is looking for another good bag supplier; I believe that it is their intent to "get out of the bag business" as he feels other off-the-shelf products will work well.

Hello AI fans! I have the UpShot, DoubleShot and Clarus SL2 600-4Ohm head. From the beginning I have had problems with this gear. First, SL2 head does not work correctly with mic and phantom power. After service it is better but it is not that good as it should - sorry...I'm not use it with mic and I think it is not good head for a mic. Of course bigger head version with XLR yes but this small amp-no. The worst for me is the DoubleShot. Everything is almost fine, I like the weight, bottom end, midrange are fine, a little lack of hights, but the speaker buzzes a lot. Especially at the bass guitar and in the upper register. The sound is so bad that I thought the speakers are blowed but they are not. I opened the speaker enclosure, everything look ok, also I removed all glued commercials of AcousticImage from the grills. I change the head for another and the problem with buzz is the same, only speaker have better and nicer sound to my ears. When I hang the speaker in the air it is ok, but on the floor it is buzzing. Also when I put pressure at the enclosure it is ok, but in normal use the problem is present. The sound is something like distortion but only at higher notes. I've changed of course the placement of the speaker, the room but no effect. Maybe you could have any idea what's the problem? I've contacted with Rick and with service but the support is poor. I guess I would have to send back the speaker for a service.

I'm interested to know what mic you are using, and what about its use is not as expected. Using the supplied XLR/TRS plug balanced adapter, the input should switch to mic impedance and provide a full 48v phantom.

Something is clearly vibrating; possibly the cabinet itself on the floor. Since it stops when you press down on the cabinet, and it stops when the cabinet is in the air, it seems the most likely culprit. It's a tiny, lightweight cabinet with LOTS of wattage being pumped through it; it's probably a mechanical vibration on the floor as the box is vibrating with high vibrational energy. Try it on a non-resonant floor (like cement or a rubber pad) and see if it stops.

Anybody here own the new Coda yet? I'd really like to hear more about how it compares to the Upshot, beyond the product description. "Warmth" and "forward" sound are a little vague for me :-)

Both the new Coda and Upshot are rated to go down to 40Hz on their specs page. The Coda has a larger volume, so I'd think it'd have a bigger deep bass response.

It's seems like the Coda Evolution would be perfect if playing bass and singing - having that small forward-facing speaker would help out vocals a lot. And then paired with a 2-channel AI amp...
