First gig with the VR - AWESOME!!

Last night was the first gig with the VR and Berg 610. I have say, it was awesome! The tone was amazing and i never got the Master volume past 9 o'clock with ample stage volume. I was playing a Fender Jazz FSR and Ibby BTB5 through a MXR Compressor, Tuner, Big Muff, Chorus, and SansAmp.

The only negative besides needing help carrying the head in :), was that the DI seemed a little weak. I made sure the level control was turned fully CW but I still had the crank the gain a bit on the PA channel from what I was used to. Has anyone else noticed this? It's not a big issue because I can always run a line from the SansAmp to the board.

Would answer but never tried the one in the VR. Suspecting the volume wasn't particularly high and the level control in the back was down. Maybe you could try adjusting the level control...

Yeah, the amp volume was about 9 o'clock. I did have the level control set to max CW. From the manual, the DI level is affected by the volume in the post-eq position. With it set on post-eq, I had almost no signal to the board. With it set to pre-eq, it was better but still seemed week compared to other amps I've used. I had to set the channel gain on the board to about 3 o'clock to get a workable signal. Swapped cables also be sure...

I assume that there wasn't a pad selected on the mixing board. When swapping cables, it is a good idea to try it into another channel strip just in case if you can.

The DI on the VR is pretty basic but a tech could inspect the switches for oxidation and the internal connectors that brings the signal to the DI transformer in the amp to ensure that everything is in order.

In general, I prefer a better quality external DI than the one that comes with any amp.

Thanks guys! I'll probably just go from the SansAmp from now on. It's not like the DI will impart the Ampeg goodness coming from the amp and Berg NV610 anyway.
A lot of folks like to take a Countryman or Radial DI and run it between the speaker out and cab because it totally will impart the Ampeggy goodness from the amp into the PA. Have to have a cab to do it because the DI doesn't take place of an impedance load, but I've done it many times before and it rocks. I'd still do it if I didn't make so many changes with volume and tone during a night ;)
