I have both good and bad recordings with both amps in a live mix and they always sounded great regardless of recording quality. Aguilar makes really great stuff.

First Impressions - Aguilar DB751

I have both good and bad recordings with both amps in a live mix and they always sounded great regardless of recording quality. Aguilar makes really great stuff.
I’m glad to hear y’all say that. I assumed they would, but after hearing how fat and massive sounding this amp was, I started to worry a bit. Would it be too boomy or muddy with these cabs in a mix? Obviously all of our gigs have been canceled so not sure when I’ll be able to test it out with the band. Incredible at home - been playing it with just the 210 hooked up for the most part.
Here it is with the Lull I got a few weeks ago. They sound incredible together. It has the Aguilar OBP3 preamp and I love having two bands of midrange to work with (400 and 800, I think). I find them more useful than the mid control on the amp, honestly. Again, all of this is me just playing at home...

So glad I just bought a new bass (in transit) and impulsively bought a Doc LLoyd compressor today.
I no longer want a DB 750/751.....

I agree. I also remember the DB750 did bedt when cutting some bass instead of boosting like crazy. And themthe and highs where subtle kind of like the old Fender stack so they needed a bit of a push to really make a difference. But that's also what makes it great, since it's near impossible to get a bad sound out of it.

750 is centered at 400
751 is centered at 750

Hard to describe well but to me the 751 has more of the density in the mids of an SVT-Pro and the lows and highs when you boost them are sadowsky-like. Fat and clear. With a furry texture at high gain, very smooth at low gain.
The 750 is a little more open/hollow in the mids (and super buttery if you cut the mid control), lower frequency “chimey” highs unless you use the bright switch, and loose/rumbley in the lows. IMHO the 750 was tuned really well to the GS series 12s when going for a juicy scooped sound, that was a special matchup. The 751 goes better with the DB series cabs, as well as a wider range of other cabs and a wide variety of rich midrange tones.
The 359 has the same pre as the 750, but the tube power amp makes it much more round and punchy in the mix.

Its a completely different circuit. They sound fairly different to me when flat, and all the controls do different things.
Sorry, didn’t mean to say you were wrong. You had it right and that’s how aguilar sold the amp, but in reality it was a pretty big redesign. It made some 750 owners/lovers bummed, and others like me very happy.

My 751 always seemed more focused and “pointed” in the mids. The 750 seemed more broad. I’m not sure if hollow is how I’d describe the mids of the 750. They are definitely there but are lower and wider and, to me, more pleasant. They are definitely different sounding, even flat. I’ve always described my 750 as sounding like an SVT on steroids.
I was one of the ones who was bummed lol. To me, they are different enough to warrant both being sold. I’m saddened that my only shot to get another 750 is to buy one used.
So you prefer the 751 over the 750? If so, why? Now I’m really curious about the differences between the two from folks who have owned both.

Was a endorsed artist once and did jimmy kimmel and a short run with a 751 and gs 410
This was 10 years ago so don’t remember much.
I owned a 750 at the time.
Probably had everything set at noon which is how I run almost every Aguilar amp ive owned except for the tone hammer series.
Anyway, I’m really tempted ( all of a sudden) to jump on a 751

yep. I can get any sound I want from it with simple tweaks. Sounds great with any bass in any venue. I couldn’t make the 750 do what I wanted. I love the 359 though. In that case I’m willing to deal with having little control because it just has tone for days.
