First Impressions - Aguilar DB751

Yet being the key word in that post ;)

I don’t know how to compare them since I’ve only played the DB751. And it is glorious. If I ever come across a DB750 in the wild, I’ll have to try it out to see what I’m missing. I just wanted to buy a new amp with a warranty. The only thing I would change is by giving it sweepable mids.

The 750 is a little more open/hollow in the mids (and super buttery if you cut the mid control), lower frequency “chimey” highs unless you use the bright switch, and loose/rumbley in the lows. IMHO the 750 was tuned really well to the GS series 12s when going for a juicy scooped sound, that was a special matchup. The 751 goes better with the DB series cabs, as well as a wider range of other cabs and a wide variety of rich midrange tones.

The 359 has the same pre as the 750, but the tube power amp makes it much more round and punchy in the mix.

Half the fun of the DB750 was rolling the preamp tubes in it. I think I eventually landed on a TungSol in the V1 spot if memory serves me right.

Probably not the kind you’d want. The Aguilar DBs are built to provide a ton of clean headroom. If your idea of saturation is to thicken up and add a little wool or hair to the tone and grunt then you’re good. If you’re looking for Ampeg grind or actual overdrive then you’ll be disappointed.

Thanks. I looking for light tube saturation when digging strings hardly, and clean sound when i play more gently. Is this possible?

Thanks. IMHO Shift Line Olympic is slightly overpriced, and i does not like gear in "pedal format". And I DIY some preamps for myself (Khromov is my surname in KhromovLabs). I think my dream rig is a preamp section from DB751 with 1000W class D power amp with dimensions of Markbass Little Mark or similar...:rolleyes:

In my experiences, no. That’s really not what these amps do. They can get wooly in tone but they won’t do any real saturation or drive. Keep in mind, these amps want to be played loud and they stay clean much of the way up. They’re great for running effects in front of them if that’s an option for you.

Totally agree. For me, clean with headroom all the way up to deafeningly loud is exactly what I need. Way more power than I could imagine using, but the tone and control are there at any volume. The only solid state head I have ever played that matches the control at volume of an svt or Fender Super Bassman.

Old thread I know but I was able to do an A/b with my Bergantino Forte HP and a Aguilar DB751 that I picked up from Sweetwater today. I wasn't exactly getting what I thought I should be getting out of the Berg and my Barefaced cabinets - volume wise. Everyone keeps telling me that rig would be unbearably loud, but I wasn't happy with what I heard during practice.

I've read numerous class D vs. everything else threads enough to think these would be pretty similar in feel and volume but wanted to see for myself. The Bergantino held its own, and is an incredible amp, but the Aguilar just had huge presence, punch, and this seemingly limitless volume - well above what I expected given the wattage. I mean that sucker packs a wallop. It filled the room and sounded so incredibly sweet. I wish it wasn't as heavy as it is, but man oh man I think it's worth it for what it brings to the table.

I don’t care what a lot of people say, class D amps are just missing “something” that led sleds and tube amps have. My GK 700RB and Ashdown ABM hit harder than any class D I’ve tried. The class D that came the closest to that feeling was the Peavey Minimega surprisingly.

Are you heavy-handed? I am wondering if it is the light touch that makes the "Ds" work for so many. I don't have an opinion, but just speculation. I had trouble getting low-end "slam" from even my Mesa 400+ . Now the ABM 500, that thing kicks like a mule! My 800RB and even the Reeves 225 respond well to my clunky playing. I admire those who have a lighter technique.
