Hey you may be right basswhore!! 
thats one of the things I thought initially, that the wrapping was loose. I changed strings and when they did it again I ruled out a bad set but I do cut the ends before I wrap it around the tuning post. Ive been doing that for a long time though and this has never happened but it makes a lot of sense and it may be the problem. Thanks for the comments everyone! Im going to check out the bass when I get home (surfin TB @ work!
