Third gig: I’m glad I have a cheat sheet but this is easy.
Second gig: I’m really glad I have a cheat sheet, only to remember which song is which.
My first gig: I can’t hear where we are and I don’t even recognize this song but the cheat sheet says it’s in E so it’s time to play a lot of random Es and some random Bs.
Point is that it gets so much better
After a few gigs and your more comfortable with the material record yourself. I think you be amazed at how good the SONG sounds. Which is the goal. A good sounding song. Even if you had mistakes, the song usually ends up sounding good. It's greater than the sum of its parts, even with a few mistakes in the bass line.
I'm your age and played guitar for a long time before taking up bass a few years ago. I always get some nerves before I play. I think a lot of people do. Typically once I get on stage the nerves subside. Think about what your playing. I know it's easier said, but focus on your playing, not the crowd. If you look at the crowd look over their heads if you can. I try to avoid eye contact as I'm sure to make a mistake.
Nobody died. It'll be fine.HI all. I just realized I am feeling a little discouraged after our gig the other night. As stated elsewhere I am 50 have very little live playing experience. I joined a cover band, learned 30 songs in about 5 weeks, caught the flu on Friday and played Saturday night. 90% went well, and the band was happy with me, but I made some colossal mistakes. A lot of them. Forget songs that I know in and out, couldn't finger things I normally can and let the pressure get to me. As I said it went quite well, but I find I have been beating myself up over it. I sat down to practice some of the harder songs and just didn't have it in me tonight. I realize I am being hard on myself, but it still sucks. Hopefully I will be in a better frame of mind tomorrow.

In my mind every audience member contemplates and discusses every single one of my mistakes while shaking their heads in pity and disgust.
Probably not true. Practice more and carry on.
