Don’t try this at home!

I looked all over and couldn’t find answers so I went ahead and did it. Another learning experience.

I own and like Trace Elliot ELF 1x10 cabs for my DBs, mostly the Yamaha SLB300, but I wanted a smaller scale for my living room/rehearsal space. I’ve ordered a custom 8” cab that is taking a long time; meanwhile I found an ELF 1x8 combo on sale. Curiosity overcame me. The combo is nearly perfect: great sound and size with plenty of power, especially with a 1x10 extension. The Faital 8PR200 speaker is very impressive in this box. However, the fan noise is disqualifying—for rehearsals and jams it’s OK but too loud for home practice and standby.

So I pulled out the ELF amp, spliced in 3’ of speaker cable with ¼” plug, and hooked up my TC BAM200. It all sounds just great: a lot like the stock combo but without the fan whir and wheeze. The TC has always been dead quiet, even when on for days.

The amp cavity makes a nice storage space if I ever wanted to take this anywhere. However, I expect I’ll eventually restore it to original configuration—it’s so convenient—and use it out in situations where noisy fans are fine.

Amp out; weight is 3.3 lbs., more than twice the hip pocket version.

Checking polarity. (Wires are 18 gauge; yellow is positive.) Yes, there’s polyfill insulation stapled inside.

Speaker cable spliced in (16 gauge), testing. Sooo much nicer.

Scrap wood creates handy cubby.
