Fixing neck-drag?

I own a conklin gt-7(wenge,and purpleheart neck),and the back of the neck is dry and my thumb drags ruthlessly...especially in the lower register.

I'm not sure what to use to fix this problem? Tung oil, some sort of wax?

Just wanted to see what you guys would suggest?:help:

(i posted this in the luthier's corner also, but i figured there are alot more folks trolling the basses forum...)

Wash your hands. :D

But seriously....I usually use a little bit of guitar honey with some very, very, very light steel wool to clean up the back of my neck. That's assuming your neck is unfinished though....

yep, or use some very fine sand paper, 400 grit, and rub it lightly all through the back of the neck. This will clean it and leave it very smooth, without causing any damage. Wenge generally does not need any oil, but getting some wax (like the Warwick wax) could make it feel nice also.

My DK 5 has the wenge / purpleheart thing going on as well. I put on a coat or two of Casey's Tru-Birch gunstock oil (available at Bass Pro Shoppes) and rub it out with #0000 steel wool. I usually finish it up with a light coat of Briwax (available via woodworkers.com) which I rub out with a ScotchBrite pad.

David King told me about the Tru-birch, Rob Elrick told me about the Briwax.
