Back in the 80s I was in a 3 piece and the drummer just didn’t show up for a gig. We improvised and went “unplugged,” and the drummer went “un-banded.”

Had a similar situation with a keyboard player a few years ago. Same scenario with missing rehearsals. Then it became clear that he also didn't practice on his own and was learning the songs at the gigs. Then one night at a gig we were ready for the set one downbeat and he still hadn't shown up. I called him and he said he thought the gig started an hour later than it did. After telling him that was a lame excuse since he should have been at the venue to help set up ahead of time anyway, I fired him right there, on the phone. Then I hung up and told the band I'd just fired the keyboard player who was still sitting at home watching TV when we were about to start our set. He hadn't even loaded his gear in his car.
The guy was 58 years old when all this went down. I can only guess he'd been pulling that crap on people his whole life and no one had ever called him to the mat about it.
We had practice on saturday morning. I set an alarm, got up, made breakfast, took a shower, drove 30 minutes. Our drummer had some dumb reason why he couldn’t make it.
Tonight we had practice. I called everyone to make sure we were good. Drove 30 minutes in the rain. Got to practice. Drummer just didn’t show. Of course he is fired but man I hate flakes. My dad taught me as a kid to be upfront with people. How rude is it to make people drive somewhere and stand them up?
True!Ugh. Can only rely on the bassists![]()
