Flakes.

...or wait (true stories all...)
-till you get kicked out of the band you started yourself for "not playing at a professional level" ...
-till you play a good show in front of a horribly mismatched audience (bikers who were cranky because a drug deal had just gone south..)
-till you step onto stage in front of a full house, and keep standing on stage for 2 hours b/c the venue-supplied FOH guy never showed and nobody knows how to handle the PA.
-till you know there is going to be a killer live review of your band in a major national newspaper the next day and then a major artist dies that same day and instead of your review, all the art pages are filled with are his obituaries.
:)

Or wait until you're that fat drunk 50 year old and the best audition you can get is with some young snot-nose with 7 originals. :D

But seriously, what are you doing to drum up auditions? Are you going to clubs to see bands and getting to know people; attending open mics; running ads? If you only have 7 originals, keep on writing. Keep networking and don't give up.

I'm not whining, I'm just expressing the issues that we've come across this far. Ok maybe I'm whining. But I know i'm more intelligent than that. I give everyone the same respect that I would expect from them. It just really frustrates me that even through adds, we can only string up three responces that get as far as our bandspace. There literally were no other responses in the few months we ran the add. But maybe we're going about it wrong.

No, there aren't any shows planned yet and wont be until we have the album done, we really want to do this right. Tho, I wouldn't mind playing some open mics to at least network and maybe find some prospects. We haven't tried it yet because the singer was against it.....

But I do believe we do deserve some level of respect. We just need to get out there and show more people that we're worth some effort. Yes I said we have 7 original songs ready for the studio.. But we have about 15 total that are just riffs and words that need more parts. So we are getting there, and we know we don't suck. So thanks for your advice, but there's no need to think we're stupid.

It's just this area, there are so few bands like us around here. It's all metal all the time in our city. Really is sad, but thats what I've seen in this scene. We aren't metal and wont be.

I think I've brought this thread to the wrong place. I don't want to throw around any more crying or give the idea that I'm being a baby, it's just really discouraging.

Thanks guys.

Nobody thinks you're stupid, but this whole "we deserve respect" thing is just dumb. You haven't done anything yet. No gigs, no studio work, nothing. You've got a few musicians together with the common goal of starting a band, with some material written. Nothing more.

Turn the situation around. You're browsing Craigslist and you see an ad for a local band looking for a bass player. Are you going to bow down to them? Of course not. Why the heck would you?

Do me a favor (and you best respect!). Post the ad you've been running for months and not getting any hits with...

Yes, please post the ad. I saw the ads my current band put on Craigslist and never contacted them. When I decided to place a "bassist seeking original band" ad, they replied, and I auditioned with them. You'd be surprised how much the verbiage of an ad can influence the number of responses...

On the respect thing, I agree - it's illogical for you to expect people you've never met to respect the hard work you've done. Especially since you don't have gigs lined up and aren't planning on doing so until you finish your album.

Also, how do you know you're "doing it right" by completing your album before playing out? I would argue that you're doing it all wrong. You should take those songs out of the practice space and play them in front of a live audience, gauge the audience response to certain songs, make tweaks, and maybe you'll get the inspiration to not only complete the rest of your material, but make it better than it would've been had you stayed out of the scene.

Start playing open mic's, start networking, place multiple ads that are worded differently, and for your own good and that of your band, kill the sense of entitlement!!!!

Nobody thinks you're stupid and nobody's trying to berate you. All we're trying to do is help. Otherwise everyone would've responded with either "carrots" or a picture of the waambulance.

Good luck and keep us posted. :)

Long, long ago, I was in an all original band.

We made our album before we were anybody.

Man was THAT a costly mistake!

Nobody needs a $10,000.00 Demo.
