When I started out on bass, I didn't want or need any effects. I plugged the bass directly into the DI box or amp. But, through the amp, I realized having some EQ control was a good thing, so I bought a Bass EQ pedal.

I read this portion of the forum and researched all of the effects that you guys and why. Thus, I experimented with Compression, Chorus, Overdrive, Fuzz, Flanger, Phaser, etc.

I discovered over this time that I didn't really like any of those effects but one: Flanger.

Chorus was too shimmery for me, and OD/Fuzz was too indistinct. Compression was something I never quite figured out. But with Flanger, I found a modulation I could use at church. I never thought Flanger would be that effect.

Max depth, min speed, mixed in just a little to the bass signal.

Yeah, I use a boss BF-3 on a few songs, it is probably my favorite modulation effect.

Personally, I like the vibe of the older Boss BF-2. Just "plain old" BBD analog vs. the digital of it's more expensive, newer brother the BF-3. And you can find it on eBay or other places for $40 or so. Half as much as the BF-3.

I hear the BF-2 has more of a warm tone, but I like the options I get with the BF-3 with the the different modes. Plus I snatched mine off craigslist for $50 it was a steal.

I checked out a few YouTube demos. It sounds like it has a lot of options to it for modulating your sound.

Bf-3 is awesome for sure. I used to hate this pedal, but then I tried settings other than suggested. It is amazing. I don't use it as a standard flanger though. More of a sweeping effect that gets louder and then quieter. I need to make sound clips cause I'm really bad at descriptions. Lol

Flanger is probably my favorite modulation effect. I have three different flangers, that I use for totally different tones. The DOD FX72 is my favorite utility flanger, which I use for clean, quiet passages, for a Tool-like vibe. I have a Stereo Electric Mistress, with the flanger depth maxed out for a really metallic, ball-bearings-down-a-drain-pipe tone, and a Flanger Hoax, for the jumbo-jet-flying-overhead through-zero flange. There really is quite a lot of variety.

I have been using the boss bf-2 and am happy with it, but lately I have wanted to try some other brands. Any thoughts on the MXR 117 flanger?

The MXR 117R is really a great pedal. It's warmer and less voiced than the Boss BF-2 (I own both flangers). The BF-2 might cut through a tad better because of its voicing (it's kind of aggressive in the mids) but the MRX is more full spectrum and musical souding. If I had to have only one flanger the MXR would be it.

Recently picked up the Ibanez Airplane Flanger. Completely over-the-top. I found one setting that does the pac-man ghost sound perfect (woo-woo-woo-woo) also has a "take off" switch that knocks the flanger into a super boost for whammy bar divebomb type effects.

Regarding the MXR 117, that is some interesting knobs. They look to be giant rubber things over the top of the knobs. The price for it is a lot more affordable than some of Flangers I am seeing out there. DOD's flangers also seem to have a nice sound.

At the moment, I am using a Fender Starcaster Flanger. I picked it up super cheap. Despite it being a bottom-feeder pedal, the metal case is heavy with 5 knobs for adjustments. I have it plugged into the FX loop on my sound processor.

i kept buying different chorus pedals because i couldn't get the sound i wanted. Listened to some Lizzy, ordered a cheap as chips Danelectro FAB Flanger and i'm in modulation

what creased me was how i had my chorus's set was pretty close to a flanger so no wonder i didn't like them.

Can't recommend the FAB enough, cheap and awesome on bass. Its on my live bosard and never let me down yet

I thought the FAB sounded great but(and I know that they are really cheap so I shouldn't complain)the bypass(I could still hear swirling noises even when it was off, especially with dirt on) drove me nuts eventually and I used the jacks to fix my delay pedal. Not a bad pedal though considering it only cost me 20 bucks and I got a decent free cable with it too.

I found a DOD FX75C cheap on eBay that is on its way to my house. I listened to a few YouTube video demos of this specific model and liked what I heard.
