Flat Strings. P pickup = Win!!!

OK I think TB converted me.

I love flats for fretless, I have for 20 years! Usually use rounds on all my fretted basses tho.
for about 4 months I have had trouble hearing my playing through the HORN SECTION in both practice and at gigs.

To make matters worse, my Wife bass, fretted P/J 5 Jazz was sounding cr@ppy with Hibeams no matter what. The highs sounded tinny.

I have read that P pickups respond to flat strings better than rounds on this site for years!
Two weeks ago I found this custom set of strings i had MADE for this bass in a box. Pyramid Gold longscale gauge .40 .60 .80 .100 .120. Well? I strung up the Wife!

Everything worked but the .120 B. I found an unused Jamerson set in the same box, and since the Pyramid B didnt work for this bass i said "what the hell" and installed the LaBella .128 from the Jamerson set.

Whoah Nelly! This B string has a core that almost broke my thumbs during install, and its so thick it wouldnt enter the hole in the post on the machine. Its so thick, however, that it settled fine in the slot right outside of the hole. Win.

Overall, this mixed string set is great!!!! Practice was a dream cause I heard every note i played. I slap some too which is why i have resisted flats and frets for so long, but the slapping sounded good. It isnt as satisfying to my hands, but music is about sound so its all good.

Tonight will be the real acid test because we are playing Queenshead Pub at Harvard and im using my small head due to time and parking constraints.

None of this success should surprise me- my band does classic R&B and many of these records were recorded with P pickups and flat strings.
I will review the live set tomorrow after having had coffee. Cheers!

Gig went well! EQ was mostly flat with bass and treble both at 1 oclock and bass boost and midshift both pulled.

Sound was fantastic, the big plus is I could hear every note I played.

The only drawback was actually.fretting flatwound strings for 3 full sets-rounds are lower tension and hurt my fretting hand less, and feel "faster" to me.

Im gonna keep flats on the Wife- and next week at the private party ill also bring the "mistress" with rotosound rounds!
Now I have to figure out which bass on which song or set...
