Flats do not work on shorties

No, he's just some random internet dumbazz. Probably a new or puppet account

Also, people believing something doesn't necessarily make it true. See: de-tensioning strings before shipping, pliability vs. scale length vs. "tightness", under powering et. al.

Interesting theory in sentence one, since I know that you and I have seen each other's posts on here for some years.

I agree with sentence two. That sword has two edges, one of which is the original thread title: "Flats do not work on shorties." People believe this even when it's wrong. Being humans, players and luthiers are all subject to the same behavior of believing something whether it's true or not.

Howdy Pilgrim, Don't sweat Pookie's first sentance, as I believe (whether it's true or not) that it was meant in an ironic/sarcastic/sardonic way – hence the rolling eyes emoticon, and especially so considering the "join dates" of all concerned. ;)

Fair enough; I've generally observed PS to have a pretty good take on things. I may not have interpreted it correctly.

I just bought a Epiphone Rumblekat Allen Woody bass which is short scale. It is brand new and was supposed to be set up before I got it and it was shipped in a hardshell case BUT it has bad intonation. When I play a note the intonation is bad and ALSO, it seems like it won't stay in tune either. I tune it and play a few minutes and check the tuner and it is out of tune again. And when I tune it and play a few fretted notes they are all sharp! The bass does look cool but it is a real pain with these issues!! I think I may return it for a refund!

My cheapo Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar special bass had perfect intonation and quieter pickups than the shorter scale Epiphone right out of the box and it wasn't even shipped in a hardshell case!!!

?

And your conclusion is..

Still deciding. I tuned up the Rumblekat and left it sit to make sure the bass was getting settled in but the intonation is still a problem. The nut has plastic shavings hanging off of it so I'm guessing the nut may not be right and that may be causing the bass to not be tuning properly. I mean, I tune it and play a song and it is out of tune again. That is not normal either.

Kinda thinking about those new Squier Vintage modified Mustang basses too....

I did notice that the middle position pickup is slightly tilted forward. Maybe that is part of the problem. I went back and remixed a couple songs I recorded using the Rumblekat and it actually sounds great in the mix. Big bottom end that sits well with acoustic guitar.
