I had heard musicians talk about the Bulgarian choir recording that Flea mentions (it came out in the early 1960s). Graham Nash and David Crosby said it changed their whole outlook on harmonizing. I finally bought it when It was reissued on CD and it’s was even better than I was expecting. I can’t understand a word of what is being sung but that’s a gift, I can just listen to how the music feels. Nowadays I still buy a lot of music from places in the world I’ve never been and know nothing about which is one reason I stopped listening to mainstream pop music, it simply can’t compare to the the journeys this other music takes me on.

That sounds so cool, I need to listen again with headphones. Definitely think I’ve heard it sampled before (VAST?), so it’s great to hear the original recording for more context. Music is awesome.

Oh yeah, my old band sampled the heck out of that record, about 30 years ago.

I'm not sure if it would be filed under cultural appropriation these days, the way we chopped it up, and blended it with samples of the Melanesian songs on the DVD menu of "The Thin Red Line" - at the time it was an honest, if magpie-like approach to creating a naive musical conversation (through the medium of noise rock).

I should dig that CD out, and give it a fresh listen.

It became a big item with the 4AD/Cocteau Twins/dream pop crowd as that label reissued it in the mid-80’s(I sold a bunch at the store I did imports for back then). Another similar musical entity that you might want to check out is Marta Sebestyen and Muzsikas…
