Double Bass Flexocore deluxe vs. original

Fran: Thanks! That helps. Can't find the string specs with that info on the Pirastro site.
Also....how is the tension compared to the Spiro Weich?

I've just put a G & D weich replacing the Deluxes. The Spiro weich feel like they have slightly less tension, I've had to rise my bridge a midge. But nothing very far apart.

the Deluxe are brighter than the original Flexocores. IMO, they can be a good choice for a player that wants a good arco sound but also need some brightness for pizz playing. Their tone and response under the bow remind me of the Pirazzi Weich when I had them on my bass.

Fran: Thanks. Are the DeLuxe G and D brighter than the Spiro Weichs?

And there are _three_ Flexocor strings, if memory serves: Flexocor, Original Flexocor, and Flexocor Deluxe (or something along those lines). I've never had the two being discussed here, but I had a set of Flexocors on my plywood bass for a while - like them well enough but, for my bass, Obligatos spoke with both more volume and more color so I went back to those.

That's a matter of resonance. A plywood bass won't resonate like a carved bass, so the ply bass won't get the full Flexocor effect.

Martin, the Deluxes are brighter on the bottom than the Originals but not as searingly bright on the G string. They're as even across the set as the 92s but do not have the usual thin, wimpy Pirastro E string. I was bowing the Deluxes on my best German bass for most of this afternoon, and the combination of bass and string is fantastic.

Kungfu: Thanks! I sent a message to Pirastro re the tension for the Flexocor Deluxe.
The only info I have been able to find on that is a European retailer who says they are "medium" tension.

I'll be interested to know what they say. I really prefer lighter strings, around the tension of Spiro Weichs. However, these Flexocor Deluxe caught my attention as I need some new orchestral strings.

Does anyone know how they compare to Evah Pirazzis?

I have my orchestral bass strung with Corelli 370Fs right now but I need something darker and thicker/louder. I want to be able to play a little jazz on it, although I do have another bass set up with the Spiro Weichs for jazz. I'm considering either the Evah Pirazzi Weichs or the Flexocor Deluxe or Thomastik Superflexibles. Any suggestions?

If you like Spiro Weichs and want something darker, get old dead Weichs. They're tough to beat. This set of Flex Deluxe, on my bass, feels like the tension is somewhere between Spiro Mittels and Weichs but it's a weird bass. The soundpost placement causes the lower strings to be more powerful, and the fingerboard was dressed for gut over steel, so the upper strings are stiff in some positions.

I've had EP Weichs on this bass, and found the Flex Deluxe much more interesting. The Flex have more depth, grit, volume and dynamic range.

Amplified with a Realist, they pizz fine. No problems there. Pizzed unamplified, your touch has to be gentle of you'll overwhelm them and kill the low end.

Dave: From Pirastro:

Flexocor Deluxe:
G -29.1 kp (approx 63 lbs)
D -29.1 kp
A - 32.4 kp
E -32.4 kp

! have extension tension also if anyone wants them.

I experimented with Pirazzis last year. The regulars were great for pizz playing although a little bit too thick for my taste so I tried the Weich. These were much easier under the bow, but lacked the pizz power and tone of the regulars. I've had the Deluxes for a few months, they bow great and they have enough brightness to pizz, I prefer them over the Pirazzi Weich.

The problem is that I just tried the Spiros and now I think that what I really need is another bass, so I can have one with Spiros and one with classical/solo rep strings. I can bow the Spiros just fine (who said they were hard to bow?) but the tone is too bright/agressive for solo rep, though great to hear myself in the orchestra. I have the Deluxes for sale, but I might put them back on my bass, still undecided.

Thanks for the data, Martin. I'm thinking you meant kg ie. kilograms - kilopascals are units of pressure. ;)

Translated:

G - 64.15 lbs.
D - 64.15 lbs.
A - 71.43 lbs.
E - 71.43 lbs.
