Double Bass fly auray - who´s played or heard one?

anybody played or heard a fly auray bass? the smaller, neck removable bass by jean auray?
how do you rate the thing as an acoustic instrument - is it the highest quality hand built bass by one of the best bass luthiers that I think it is?
let me know what you tink - if you´ve played or heard it in person so to speak.

Hi Basic, I play an Auray Bass with the removable neck — this one here.

My bass is a carved model that he made for me. The neck removes and fits in a rifle case, that attaches to the bass case, which holds the body of the bass. It weighs in under 30 kilos, and airlines will accept it as baggage. It's a great bass. The FlyAuray is even lighter (under 20 kg), and he has a model that's all plywood and one with a carved top and plywood sides (I think).

There are cheaper alternatives, but I think Jean is a fantastic luthier and a great guy to work with when building, purchasing, or converting a bass to a neck-removable system.

I got to play John's bass once when it was in the local shop here. I gotta say that it didn't overwhelm me, but I tried it for only a few minutes. But, the WDR Big Band concerts get broadcast locally, and I must say that you very, very rarely hear such a nice bass sound in a big band performance context.

Seriously, every bass is different, and it depends almost as much on the setup. At least for jazz playing. Basic74 is looking for an instrument for chamber music...not my field of expertise.

I couldn't really see the bass that well but that band sounded beautiful.

Yes, that's the case, but it wasn't too long after that that I heard a Mingus tribute concert on the radio in which you munched those charts like a hungry hippo. You must have really eaten your Wheaties that morning is all I have to say.
