Best one i've ever played!
Not to mention its got a Neck like a Rickenbacker... what?
This bass is one of only Four Known to exist (by me) and yes, i have looked very hard.
I put Dimarzio's in it... and then SPECTOR bass pickups out of an old Kramer. The Spectors suit it better.
It is a Mahogany neck thru body, with alder wings, and a maple fretboard. Bliss!

FYI, I bought one of these cheap Davison V Basses off ebay a couple of years ago. A little over $200 with shipping. Not a terrible bass out of the box, but with a few upgrades could be very decent. It's long scale, however, and the hugest damn thing I've ever played (34" scale, 52" long). Balances surprisingly well and is fairly lightweight:

I've played a few cheap Deans and I've actually been surprised by how nice the necks feel on them. Like all cheap basses they need a little work, but if you really want a Flying V-shaped bass and you're willing to invest in a little set-up work and maybe a new pickup, you can do okay with a Dean, IMHO.
The one plus about the cheap deans are they have bolt-on necks and are 34 scale so over time you can upgrade all the parts and end up with a better bass then you out started with without too much trouble.
My Epiphone V has that black non-slip rubber pad, but I never ever hold it there. It's meant to be played like the V guitar. Don't feel less bassist because of that. It's all about the music, and what's comfortable to you. I happen to find V basses extremely comfortable AND practical, not just a gimmicky thing. It seems to me that to many it's a bassist pride thing. If you hold it "properly" (I know that's pretty subjective) and you hate how it feels or plays, then try something else. It only slips when held like a "standard" bass.
I would buy Dean V's if I know it can be setup properly, and I would most certainly upgrade the pickups ASAP. That's just me, but I have the hunch that if most inexpensive basses sound bad it's due to functional but ugly sounding, "hot" pickups. It's not the V shape that makes them sound that bad.

How about a 6-string fretless Flying V with Bartolini pickups and a Myrtle Burl top. Is that just wrong?
