Future New Contra-bass Clarinet Day! Just got this for $1000 less than the going rate:

Thing is near as tall as I am, maybe taller with the peg. :) Now, I haven't touched one in almost 40 years now, will be interesting to see if I remember anything about playing it. (Was once good enough to make All States without even auditioning, but it's been a while.)

I started on it in jr high as a side thing, and liked it, but I guess I wasn't enthusiastic enough, my parents decided for me that I should just stick with clarinets. I think they didn't want to pay for the extra lessons (clarinet lessons were free through school, but only 1 instrument per student).

I'd love a contrabasson too, but those are insanely expensive (like >$30000). :eek::greedy::greedy:

I dug out my regular old bass clarinet tonight, kind of surprised I can still kind of make that "go", better than last time I tried it. It really needs a "setup" new pads and adjustments. But I figure I should start trying to get some chops back before the big guy gets here. :)

The one I bought is mostly plastic, but obviously one of these would be better for metal (actually the version I played in school):

I actually marched with one of these a few times in marching band before the director decided it was silly and made me use the regular bass instead.

That is really cool looking. Judging by the scale, is the footrest for use in the sitting position?
Your post begs the question then. What is the best plastic for Metal? :cool: (I imagine that ones been done here before?):meh:

Yes, the post is for sitting. :) The plastic is really just a cheaper more stable substitute for the traditional grenadilla wood, but those are insanely more expensive. Don't know if anyone even makes a real wood contra any more, but if so, it's $$,$$$.$$!! :greedy:

Bass clarinet is often heard in film music scores when there's a creepy suspenseful scene with something bad coming. Dark rich tone, I guess, but I always pick it out (biased I guess). ;)
