Fodera: Basses worth the money?

I will say that I've had my Fodera for over a year. I don't typically keep basses for that long, but I've always felt like this one should stick around. I got a pretty nice deal on it because I traded my Wal towards it. I got the Wal used in England at a great price. I also gave an MTD 635 and a Lull P4, so it was three basses for one, but I really like the Fodera. I see people paying $1500 and up for a set of rims for their cars, and then a couple thousand for a stereo, so I figure basses are my luxury items.

I think that at some point in my life I would like to have a great Fodera, a SF-bay Hippie Alembwich and a Carl Thompson in my collection... These are dream basses for me....but that is where I hold my respect for them and the workmanship that goes into them. Some would say that they are 'workhorses' and they gig with them constantly... I guess it is where you are in your life, playing, professional musical career and so on.

Some people will also say that many careers have been built on a p-bass, cable and amp.... go figure.

IMHO If my musically-related revenue stream can justify the cost, I'd go for it...
For example, when I was in sales and spending a bunch of time in my car, I bought something a bit more comfortable, cause I could justify the cost with it's use and need in my life's 'little-equation'... granted I lived in a little 'shoebox of an apt' in Boston at the time. ("you can sleep in your car, but you can drive your apt", go figure).

As you've probably figured out by now, the answers to your question range all the way from "Oh, Hell YES!!" to "Oh, Hell NO!!" Which pretty much means "only you can decide". Are Foderas "worth it" to me? Well... no, they aren't. They seem to be excellent instruments, and the folks who have them sure seem to like them; but for me, they just don't scratch any of my itches. There's no place in my herd for anything they make; they're very well filled by other basses. And, like a depressingly large number of "custom" shops, I see no indication that they make anything that's left handed. There's no box labeled "orientation", or anything of that sort, for me to check on their Custom build sheet, for example. Maybe they do make lefties, but.. you'd never know it from their website; and those folks who do make them, usually aren't shy about saying so. In any case, I can't say if they're worth it - to you. That's for you - and your bank account - to decide...:whistle:

I've got to say yes BUT even when I've been able to afford them I haven't as the same price would get me two or three basses of great quality. Second hand makes sense if there's a big price drop but it won't replace the choice of, say, a fretless, a four string and a five tuned E-C(still saving up for the last one). IMHO
That said I did once have an Alembic and I love the fact that I can say I had one.

People have money, people will spend money.
They won't sound or play any better than 99.999% of basses made today.
But, if I had a lot of cash I would buy an Alembic Stanley Clark.
I still don't understand how people are paying thousands for sadowskis, which are basically Fender copies. Any MIM Fender will sound and play as good as any sadowski with a bit of fret work and maybe a pickup change.

Oh, well... and I'm usually so good about checking thread dates, too...:rollno: In any case, my answer would be the same if somebody posted the question an hour ago, so... It does bring up something I wonder about, though; who on earth digs 17 year old posts up, anyway?!? And, more to the point - why?!? :wideyed:
