This is Mitch's bass, but that top is so nice I'd hate to break it up with big, black pickups... I'd preserve that top's look by adding pickup covers.

Plus, I've always wondered about Vic's new Yin Yang. That's not Holly on the top anymore, is it? His website describes it as having a "jazzier" tone and new EMG pickups

I don't know if the body wood on his new one is walnut or alder. The Yin Yang used to be alder as the standard, but I think the new Yin Yang is walnut.

The yellowish wood is avodire a/k/a satinwood.

I noticed on the website that the NYC in stock section is blank. I was just curious if that meant that NYC models couldn't be bought directly from the shop for the time being.

I have a feeling that if the guy were to sell it back, I would probably be paying the same amount as ordering a new one. I know how much roughly he paid for it (long story). The only thing I did not like about that bass was that it had Aero's. They were not for me. I may just order one like the mock-up above.

Okay, here is the deal with these Yin Yangs and Yin Yangs in general...

Anthony Wellington's was built in 2005 and (as you can see) is an Imperial. His body wood is Ash and the top is Walnut and Birdseye Maple. The fingerboard is Birdseye Maple and Walnut.

Vic's original Yin Yangs were Holly / Ebony tops over an Alder body with a Birdseye Maple / Ebony fingerboard. Actually his very first Yin Yang (not really seen much publicly) was a fretless and has an Ebony fingerboard...

His most recent Yin Yangs -- from 2006 -- are Walnut bodies with Ebony fingerboards. The tops on these two look similar -- one is Pau Amarillo and the one in the photo is Satinwood. Back in 2004 or so, Vic asked Vinny and Joey to build him a Yin Yang that would give him some different tonal options.

He used these Yin Yangs predominantly on both the SMV Album and on A Show of Hands (his last solo effort). He still mainly uses the original Yin Yang (Alder body) with the Flecktones...

Now the deal with Yin Yangs -- they are an absolute bear to make and take the shop at least twice as long as a "regular" Fodera to build because of all of the complicated inlay work. We are no longer selling them through our dealer network -- they have become a direct sale only item.

Additionally, beginning in 2010, we will only be making a limited number of them. Right now the thinking is a series of no more than six per year -- four 4-strings and two 5-strings. There will be a Yin Yang symbol added to the back of the headstock that will have an engraving indicating the year and the number within that year's series (i.e. "2010, 1 of 6).

Anyway, even though we will start selling Yin Yangs this way in 2010, the first to appear in public bearing the new Yin Yang symbol on the back of the headstock will not show up until sometime in early 2012 because they have to be built!

We are really changing the way that we handle the NYC's and consequently we have not been able to keep a lot of them around as stock instruments. We have been adding a lot of the Fodera-like features to the recent ones we have been building -- killer tops, dual coils, etc. -- and they have been selling faster than we can make them, so there has no longer been the need for a "stock" page.
