I can't pick this bass up without playing lots of bright size life quotations. It has small frets and a flame maple neck. The alder is described as being very old.

I'm pretty sure I had that bass for a while. I had a 4 string that was just totally ridiculous and it looked like that. It would have been late 90's sometime. Then I don't know what ever happened to it. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's one of those "special" ones. From what you're describing I think it almost MUST be.

I'd like to hear about different rationales people have used to select different wood choices and combinations, particularly with regards to tone. Also, I'd like to get a sense of how much you guys think the tone block in an elite changes the tone if different woods are used. For example, why is walnut and ebony emerging as a 'new classic' for foderas? Where does kingwood fit in the tonal dimensions compared to rosewood, ebony, maple or other fingerboards? Is mahogany closer to alder, walnut or neither? What makes mahogany a relatively neutral wood for tone? How do the wood choices people have selected stack up against the classic combinations of alder/rosewood or ash/maple? Very few of us have the opportunity to compare closely all of these Foderas with different woods but matching electronics, but I'm sure you've got some opinions on the matter. I'm specifically interested in this question with regards to Fodera basses, although I realize that you can approach it just as easily from the perspective of any other builder. Let's hear what you think.

This is an excellent question, and I look forward to hearing some responses, especially from the Fodera guys. I will offer my 2 cents though...
Kingwood is in the same family as Rosewood. It's a very dense, hardwood. I would expect it to more closely resemble rosewood or cocobolo in tonal properties.
IMO, mahogany is closer to alder. Walnut is more dense I believe, and mahogany has the warmth and softness of alder, or close to it.
Looking forward to reading other responses. I just ordered 5 different Foderas, and I tended to stick with the woods I have more experience with.

BTW, I have a 13 year old daughter so I got to see the new Jusin Bieber movie this weekend... in 3D no less!
The whole time I was sitting there I kept telling myself it was worth it to be a good dad.
I know Bieber's a prefab teen idol, but I left with the impression he does have quite a bit of natural talent as well.
Of course, he is no where NEAR Esperanza's league though!
I saw Esperanza last time she came to Stanford- a really intimate concert, and she was AMAZING. It blew everyone away. I didn't even know she was nominated, but it couldn't have gone to a more deserving artist.

In truth, Justin is a very talented kid and has worked really hard. I could see him disappearing for a while and returning as a more mature artist a la Justin Timberlake.
I was just thrilled to see that the marketing monster didn't eat all the awards this year. He was the likely winner, and you know that Esperanza was chosen because she's good.
