Fodera Club Part VII

I've got a question for everyone. I posted this is one other thread, too, but was curious on this crowd's perspective.

Say you have an instrument which not only has nothing wrong with it, but is outright awesome. But you knew that for the next, say, 10 years, you would only have access to it for about a week or two around Christmas. After that, access is unlimited. Would you keep it?

And then let's say that this applies to three instruments. (None of which are Foderas, btw.)

Absolutely. In the spirit of the circumstance presented here, an example of a truly exceptional instrument is hard to come by IME and is worth holding on to.w

Are you going to force us to imagine the conditions that led to these circumstances?

timeshare? i guess i would—might drive me nuts. depends how much they cost me. do i already own them?

MD/PhD on the opposite coast, in a tin-can apartment where I don't have space for more than two basses. I can't foresee myself having the money during that time to have a place large enough to store the 6 instruments (and cases- they're the worst part) that I'll own once my 2nd Fodera is done. That said, I don't NEED the money to get by.

As it stands I was planning on just having the two Foderas with me on the east coast.

I'll take place of you for simplicity, and say that yes, I already own them. They cost ~$19000. They would sell for ~$10-12000, if I'm very patient. Does that affect your outlook?

Thanks everyone. I'm genuinely interested to hear your thoughts.

First off Angus, I am flattered that the Foderas are the ones that will be sharing the apartment! That said, I personally would definitely find a way to keep them if I didn't need the money...I did that during the years that my wife and I had a small apartment with no room...I kept my main bass with me and the other two that I had at that time stayed safely tucked away at my parents' house...

I agree with Jason 100% you'll regret it in the future if you sell them. A small suggestion... you mention the cases taking up lots of room.. You might try gig bags to lessen the foot print. That's what I have been using since '83. For example a nice double bag will give you lots of protection, store 2 basses and still only use about as much space as a hard case.. maybe a little less even.
cheers

You can fit 4-6 bass cases under a bedframe easily. You can also bed bedframe boosters at lots of store to boost your bed up an extra 10 inches or so, which would allow for even more.

yeah, i'd do it. 10 years? long program. is that set in stone?

Thank you for the responses, everyone. It's very much appreciated!

It's the exact same situation as yours, Jason- they're just hanging out with my parents for the time being in a safe, humidity/temperature controlled environment. How long did the two live at your parent's house, Jason?

I guess the consensus is that I should keep them, which is internally the answer I wanted to hear! It's hard to justify keeping them for so long unused, but I guess it's cheaper than to repurchase similar ones later (which may not be as good).

Yeah, that's actually what I'll be doing with the two that I'll have in Connecticut with me. A single double gigbag takes up way less space than two big hardcases.

Even if I store three gigbags for 6 basses, I then have to convince my girlfriend that I should be taking up six instruments-worth of wall space in my 500sq ft apartment. The NYC dwellers here probably have zero sympathy for me. :D

It's about 8-11...hopefully more of the former than the latter. There is also about zero music scene there, so so much for supplemental income from session work!

There have been a lot of posts asking questions about how we build. Towards this end, rather than answering them all individually, we thought that we would add a photo essay to the website. Check out the following link and then look for the "Building a Fodera Monarch" section. These were all taken while I was visiting the shop to write my book about Fodera...

Enjoy!

This must be a very serious relationship! Giving up your basses for her,.... I hope she understands what that means!

All kidding aside, I wouldn't sell the basses that your not taking with you either. They are obviously basses that you find irreplaceable.

Leave the fender, take the fodera.

That's very cool, Jason! I like the step where Anthony Jackson walks in and gives his approval of your bass..... And the way that the colors of the buckeye changed in the spray booth. Thanks for adding that to the website!
