my prob with barts is the low output . . . at least for me (i use some very overwound stuff made by the guy who used to run the nordstrand custom shop). otherwise, i sort of like the mellow quality (to my ears).

emjazz said:Steuart....what does overwinding a pickup do? Does it just give you more output? Doesn't it mellow the top end as well? I know you don't use a preamp so this makes sense for sure. I haven't been using a preamp in my bass (Nordstrand pre in mine doesn't do much for my bass and kills batteries fast...). I can't say I've missed having a preamp with my Barts honestly.
it gives a lot of output. i can't recall if it dampens high end or not. i don't think so, at least judging from my situation. i'm getting the harmonic of the 9th with a fair amount fromt hese things.
it definitely makes the pickups sound more agressive--slams the amp's preamp harder and helps with the effects that i use (i realized this after using a bass with my nord stuff versus a bass with barts in it). when joey and vinny heard my stuff they were pretty surprised that it was all passive.

It doesn't seem that a particularly "open" sound is generally the aim when using over wound pickups (or those with more rather than fewer windings).

well, we'd have to sit down and compare notes. my pickups passive with no preamp sound way more open than most basses i hear with actives or passives with a preamp (which all sound compressed to me).
if anything, i feel like they have too many highs at certain points.

But even with that passive straight to socket pickup I noticed that the one I have in the bass now sounds more open than the previous one which had more windings on.
as to top end... I don't think there can be too much since one can mute it more easily than add it if it is not present.(IME)

Ha ha! You guys don't like Bartolini pickups huh?

I spoke yesterday with Jason and we went over some details of which I had been completely unaware, and while I had been rolling the idea through my mind, I am THIS CLOSE to placing an order. Oh my...
I want a five string. Was thinking about an Emperor II, but Jason pointed out that that model is the largest Fodera makes, not a great idea for a small person (5'6" on my tallest day). So now...maybe a Matt Garrison style body. I've already gotten my head around that as a firm possibility. Somebody talk me outa 'dis!!!!
