As they say, "different strokes." Between my two Monarchs, I like the ebony more than the Braz rosewood. By a fair margin.

Then again, I'm whack :D

It's really funny...I am either really moody or schizophrenic because my "favorite" Monarch seems to change from week to week and month to month. I love having different options available to me and end up enjoying the nuances of each. Joey (my partner here at the shop), on the other hand has had just one bass for 15 years! So, yes, "different strokes," love that!

Funny because I was just about to go back and edit my post. I was swapping around basses tonight and found myself playing the koa and thinking, "man, this thing sounds killer." It also ended up in Vic's hands for a track he was working on in his studio awhile back but that's another story. Suffice it to say that he got sounds out of it that I certainly can't replicate :D The YYD is still what I grab first, but I can't really say the margin is wide.

My new Nick Lloyd double bass has some small figuring on the ebony board. I haven't
asked Nick about the figuring, but I suspect he's in the same boat as the other luthiers mentioned here, especially since he uses such little wood and is a newer builder. It's a little less dense of a grain as well.

He had to use this piece of scrap claro walnut for the back as well. For environmental reasons. I took one for the earth here. ;)

I've owned lots of basses and guitars with ebony, and currently am moving my electric basses back to rosewood in some swaps because I hear a warmer tone in my head. It's more my sound. One of the main reasons I'm swapping from an ebony board Sadowsky to Braz. RW Callowhill shortly, and my soon to be completed Fodera will have Braz RW.

On my two electric guitars, I like the extra clarity from the ebony.

I asked the question justa few months back

'is Fodera still offering ebony boards'?

the reason I asked at the time was because ebony is not listed on the price sheets as an option - so, I was informed that it was the standard FB material choice - thus not itemized

the reason for my question was that several 'green conscience' builders have begun standardizing on alternative species and have been for several years now

figured or not ebony is endangered if not altogether gone in the areas where it was pleniful just 50 yrs ago

its just a matter of time....:crying:

It was an all-day festival with the first band on at 11am I think. We hit at 5:30pm and The Bangles followed us at 7:30pm, then fireworks were at 9pm. Really fun gig. The beach area was packed. The SVT was house backline and actually started acting up midway through the set. Luckily FOH was killer so the crowd didn't notice a thing. Nice to have huge subs on a gig, though mistakes then have no place to hide :D

Yeah, one is a Certified Pre-Owned (the Emperor II) and the other is the result of a little "oops"...the customer ordered it with a Walnut body and somehow we made it with Alder. The whole being human thing is such a chore. It's actually a really cool bass. In my 5 years of hanging around the shop, this is the only 21 fret Dovetail I can remember...
