And...Isn't black often a downgrade from(cheaper than) gold when looking at hardware?

He is referring to an Emperor 5 Standard...

In terms of "downgrade" for black...that's a highly personal thing. Some people like black and some like gold. Gold hardware does cost us a LOT more money than black because it is plated with real 24 carat gold, but we do not charge more for it. So I guess from a "value" standpoint, black hardware could be considered "less value for money spent."

Black is usually cheaper than gold, that's why I was wondering about a changing charge for a black one to be put onto a bass that would usually get gold hardware( more expensive than what he is after) and which isn't built yet( nothing to change as nothing's on there yet)-Unless of course, I misunderstood, and the instruments are in fact built already and a change would indeed need to be made to an existing instrument.

Ah ok, I was not aware of shops taking money for making a phone call( I guess that's all that is involved?).
I have not ordered an instrument from a shop yet, hence my ignorance on this .

It has nothing to do with charging for a "phone call." The reality is that we would very much like to (and easily could) sell all of the Standards that we build with exactly the same specs. That said, for something as simple as changing hardware color, we have agreed internally to do this as long as it is done at the time the order is placed and for a small additional charge.

Yes, we do want to have some level of fee associated with changing a spec on something that is, for all intents an purposes, meant to be a "stock instrument." I hope that this makes sense. The alternative was to allow no changes at all...

I know where cnltb is going with this and my personal opinion is that I think it's pretty lame to charge extra to put on black hardware instead of gold, especially considering the gold costs so much more. Whether the bass is a standard model or not makes no difference IMO. Fodera is still a custom shop turning out small numbers, there is no extra work to put on black hardware. I totally understand not changing any other spec on a standard, I just don't feel hardware color should considered part of the standard spec.

Then don't buy one. Or start your own company and you can determine policies. Simple. Life is easy when you have choices

If you deviate from the standard, it becomes a custom, doesn't it.

ya know. it's their biz, i think they can do what they want.

that being said, one could look at it this way:

if you buy in bulk for x amount of gold tuners for your standard runs, you probably get some discount on the larger amount of tuners. maybe that savings gets passed along in the final price for the standard instuments. if you go to the black, maybe those tuners haven't been bought in the same amount and would, therefore, literally cost more.

i'm not a business guy, but onecould imagine a scenario that plays out like this.
