if you buy in bulk for x amount of gold tuners for your standard runs, you probably get some discount on the larger amount of tuners. maybe that savings gets passed along in the final price for the standard instuments. if you go to the black, maybe those tuners haven't been bought in the same amount and would, therefore, literally cost more.

i'm not a business guy, but onecould imagine a scenario that plays out like this.

Business sense chiming in. Standards are standards, and a great thing for the bass community. If they aren't what you want, the custom route is always available, as is the used market.

The bass I got is very similar to the emperor standard, in appearance and specs, but it has a few features that I wanted over the standard(tilted head stock, matching headstock, custom preamp in emperor layout, alder body, dark rosewood board). I wound up paying more for a used instrument, but hey...again with the choices.

Now I just need to make time to head back down to the shop for a plec job and to starts spec-ing out my future 30th birthday present to myself...

i think it's okay. it seemed reasonable, it just veered.

somehow it's human nature to assume the worst and not follow things in a logical progression the see why something might happen.

i do it all the time.

Jason already said the gold hardware costs more. Is Fodera using the same hardware on the standards as the customs? If so, it should make no difference from a cost perspective what color they use, especially considering the black costs less.

Munji, I agree if you deviate from the standard it becomes a custom. That is why I said I don't think hardware color should be considered part of the standard specs, especially since Fodera doesn't have an upcharge for gold hardware on their customs. Further, I think the best answer is to not deviate from the scheme at all; don't change the hardware for any reason, let the buyer do it after the fact if they choose. The fact that someone can change the hardware color sort of defeats the purpose of a standard. With that said, I personally don't think it's a big deal about hardware color and still feel changing from gold to black should not be an upcharge or considered to be change to the standard specs. Either way, I'd have no problem owning a standard Fodera whatever the hardware is.

yet, he said that the bilk buying did change the price structure.

think about it, they do runs of 60 (i think it is) for standards. if they take orders for those, or a couple different runs of standards, that means they're buying something along the lines of 60 to 180 sets of tuners. when you start buying in that amount, it's going to be cheaper *per set* because you buy in bulk. so even if a per-set price for an *individual* set is more, the bulk price might not be.


the whole big-box store industry is based on this concept.

and you're not even factoring in that the standard idea is to take the man hours out of following all those little details that go into custom work.

so, it doesn't bother me, i get that it bothers you, but i don't think you're getting it from their side of the deal.

My 0.02's...I saw 4 ESS at the shop ready for delivery. Tried them and they were awesome. The set up was perfect and the fit and finish was as good as it gets. Aesthetically speaking the gold hardware looks awesome. I am sure the black will look just as good but you won't get a sweeter looking or playing bass then the ESS.

Gang, we are small and yes, a bit quirky. You gotta be to do what we do...to care as much as we do, and not everything we do is going to always make complete sense. Please allow us that. It's the same company DNA that makes the instruments what they are.

Thanks so much for the kind words! I gotta admit that you had the "Fodera Grin" the minute you touched your bass...I personally know exactly what it feels like. All of us here really enjoyed meeting you and are thrilled that you are now part of the Fodera Family!

I agree with this. There's no reason they have to offer the change, especially when it so clearly reads 'no customisation' on the price list. Yes, offering a choice of black or gold seems like a logical choice from the client-side, but there's a lot that goes into putting a line of instruments out, and I really don't think that second-guessing a company like Fodera is a good way to show appreciation for its products and customer service. Because at the end of the day, offering to make the change is where first-rate customer service comes in.

Because we personally liked the way they look better with Gold. When we start to make decisions to save a few bucks here and there for a reason like that it would be the beginning of the end of the thinking that got us here in the first place IMHO...

AMEN!! Don't change a thing...Keep doing the things that make you Fodera!!! I know that I am not the only one who appreciates it! For what it's worth I really dig the Black on my YYS and really dig the Gold on the ES5!
