Well, as usually a Fodera Std has served as a gateway drug...again. The MGS has been intoxicating, and my first experience with a high-C has been eye-opening. Of course that leads to another un-explored area...the dreaded 6-string. Instead of jumping into the deep end on that (I still have string damping concerns for a 6) I decided to put a toe in the water and have a used Zon Sonus 6 coming at the end of the week. But if all goes well...well...um...

For me fast chording on the 6 = pain. MGS no prob. Cursed w/small hands.

It's a gateway drug here too. Looking at customs again....oh geeze.

haven't tried the standard... mine is 18.5mm, i think standard is 17mm? Also the buckeye top option is what I probably love the most. Couple of extra bucks but imo its worth it. Cant complain about the standard either!

The MGS is 17.5mm. The Zon 6 I have coming is 16.5mm. I know that I don't really dig 5-strings with 19mm spacing (but no problems with 4s). If I like the 6 I think a 17.5mm spaced Monarch would be a great spec (chambered walnut of course )

It's 17.5 on the MGS if that's what you are referring to. I actually bumped mine a little wider just to make switching with the imperial less of an adjustment. I concur on spending the extra bucks for the custom woods and options like the custom bridge, etc. Shortly after I put my deposit an 33" mg signature went up for sale here for ~9k. Someone got a real nice bass. My timing was a hair off, but I'm pleased in the end.

2. giant steps at 200 bpm, doesn't really float my boat (and, no, i *can't* play it). extra range seems more important. ymmv.

3. the damping thing comes around on the right hand. probably easier if you don't switch between 4/5/6-string basses.

Seeing the old a new style peg head next to each other is cool to. May have to rethink some specs..

Thanks, The Fodera people are, collectively, a fantastic bunch and recommend that anyone go there and meet them. You feel like you are in a home instead of a business.

Fodera's standard string spacing on any bass, whether it is 4, 5 or 6 string, is 19mm. The only exception where 17.5mm is the "standard" is on the "Matt Garrison Standard" models.

My 6 string has 19mm spacing and I love it :-D. I have long fingers though.

This. If you commit to a 6 long enough the damping does come around. Use a floating thumb technique and you're good to go.

Not spending much time here of late, but when I do pop in...the anxiousness quotient hits high gear! Just under 5 months until the scheduled start date for my new baby...

I really am still in awe of how good it plays and sounds. I'm already contemplating selling some of my bass collection to get a 5 string emperor or monarch. And this is just the standard model, the high end models are sex with a bass.

Hmm. Maybe the new standard. Shouldn't be out now...

That's probably a special run just for that retailer. I doubt that is the "new standard" that has been discussed. It is more expensive and (arguably) less bass than the YYS.

I hate JJ basses so it has no attraction for me
