Fodera Club Part XIX

I don't know about the koa bass, or have any experience with aeros, so I don't have any input on that bass. BUT, the flame maple bass has the same tone woods and pick ups as my walnut top six string Fodera (mahogany, indian rosewood, duncan duals) and it has a killer slap tone. I'm not personally much of a slap player, but the tone on my fodera makes me really want to work on my slap technique.

What I find interesting about this page after translating it (to figure out what the different prices were) is they offer financing payment terms INCLUDING the final total cost of each term. Kinda' cool.

BTW, 598,000 Yen is currently a little over $6K.

I've been doing my own work for while now and try to do things right. My bass came with EMG's in it, so it didn't have a ground wire from the bridge or shielding in the pickup cavities. I switched to passives, so I needed to shield them. I still have to ground the cavities when I get home from work tonight.

Great job, but you were having issues with this? It has the EMG pickups, right? I always thought EMG pickups were pretty well shielded... no?

The only reason I've ever found this necessary is for pickups that are not sufficiently shielded (or at all in some cases), and even then, most high end instruments will at least use conductive paint to accomplish the same thing (if not foil).

I think that's because they're internally shielded and the shield can is already tied to the ground lead at the pickup, which takes care of it.

I switched to passives, so I needed to shield them. I still have to ground the cavities when I get home from work tonight.

Ok, the plot thickens...

You switched to the Hz pickups?

I guess even then I'd expect EMG to do the internal shield thing... just to make sure I'm on the same page, did you notice a diff in noise levels going to the passives, or did you just do this automatically?

I'm mainly just curious if the Hz's differ from the normal active EMGs in this regard.

Yeah, the bass was DEAD quiet with the original EMG's in it. I couldn't even tell if the amp was on until I struck a note. As soon as I switched to passives I got a decent amount of buzz when my fingers weren't on the strings. I was never really happy with the EMG's. I tried mixing two brands to make my own PJ set, but that didn't work out very well for me. The bass will sport Lindy Fralins when I'm done with the shielding.

I have a friend that has Lindys on his Xotic 5 string. His jazz bass tone is incredible. I also had EMGs in a Warmoth jazz bass copy I built years ago. Quiet but kind of sterile. Needless to say that was the last time I used EMGs.

You all might know this already, but:

IME if you have buzzing that increases when your hands are not touching the strings its a grounding or pickup shielding issue.

Provided the bridge is grounded properly, if you shield the pickups well it will fix it. Im talking around the coils and between the pole pieces.

This is not related to single coil hum, you will find this buzzing in both sc and hb mode.

You might be surprised how many high end basses Ive had to do it on.

Weird... I absolutely loathe EMGs unless they are in Foderas (P/J), Modulus or Spector (both dual coils). I can't stand them in anything else.

+1! I thought it was just me! I have never dug the EMG's in anything except my Spectors and my Steinberger. I was a little hesitant about the YYS BECAUSE of the EMGs but decided to take the plunge and REALLY dig them in this bass....

Thanks, that's exactly why I'm shielding the pick-up cavities right now. I'm going to solder a ground lead to them and ground everything to the inside of the control cavity, then to the preamp. It's definitely not single coil hum, as I have a lateral humbucker in the bridge position.


I actually thought about shielding the inside of the pickup housing, but didn't really know if that was a good idea. I know shielding the cavities is industry standard, so that's what I went with.
