I was happy when a friend of the family bought a new mandolin. A Gilchrist. Who knew you could spend $25k on one of those little things

That AJ would be a great bass for me to play at my next $100 cover gig at the Legion. Mustang Sally and Brown Eyed Girl, here I come!

I remember a famous cellist while talking about his super expensive Stradivarius (or similar) instrument say that the cello in question wasn't really his. He was the owner, but owning an instrument of that quality level, he believed that he was just babysitting it for the next owner. True when you think about it.

Smart is a relative term, my friend! We all choose to spend our money where we want, IF we are fortunate enough to have money left over after paying the bills and putting food on the table. I have been EXTREMELY fortunate in some ways, having musical instruments pretty much at my whim, including 2 Foderas (one of which is soon to arrive) with the thought of a third. I have instruments that I don't even know how to play, hoping that one day I'll attempt to learn (keyboard workstation [synthesizer]) and I'm even pondering a stupidly expensive snare drum which I don't know how to play, either. Some people own yachts, some spend crazy money on private airplanes, some have exotic cars...most of us here spend money on basses.

Yes, there are basses that are 1/10 the cost of a Fodera, and many folks here on TalkBass would consider THOSE expensive. I get considerable pleasure in owning the best of the best, when I can afford it, and simply the aesthetic magnificence of a Fodera is sufficient for me to spend the money.

When I lived in Florida, my teacher would let me play her $250,000 bass all the time. It was a Gabrieli, like what Edgar Meyer plays. Hers was from 1750. When I was in college, my teacher wanted to sell me one of his best basses for only $50,000....haha so to me these foderas are cheap!

Holly used as a top does not have a major impact on tone. Its tap tone is similar to a medium density Maple...

In the Newborn link that you provided, there is already a description of the instrument's tone. Since we wrote that right after playing it, it's a lot better then me going from memory...LOL!

It's not from the Holly. That EII has just about every possible option on it and it is being sold through a Dealer in Japan that paid customs duty, shipping, placed a deposit with us well over a year ago to build it and, presumably, would like to make a return, right?

Still have it! The wenge neck sounds freaking awesome.

I think I need to swap the pickups, though. The Lane Poors are awesome in my Imperial/MG, but they are probably not the best in the Monarch. I just haven't brought it up with Jason yet. Luckily they built the pickup covers to allow pickup swaps (very smart of them!).

Folks, do any of you own 34" AND 35" Fodera 5ers?

I love my E5S (34" scale) but have generally played 35". I am not a big guy, but I might be leaning towards a 35" in my Monarch 5er build. I have flip flopped between 34" and 35" for years, so I don't think having one of each will be a difficult transition.

My personal bias is one scale length and stick with it but plenty of guys have no problem switching between 34 and 35. I've done it in the past and wasn't a deal killer. That said, I ordered my 5s in 34" scale so that every bass I have is 34". I do have different string spacings which doesn't bother me much but drives some guys nuts. So a big ymmv.
