I would love for you to play this bass. I know it's a sixer, but that's about the only thing I can see that'd stop you from giving this bass 9.9 out of 10. Ok make that 9.5.
The B string is great. It has great depth and can hold it's own in any situation ie dub-step, reggae you name it. I believe that's helped by that bone of contention the extended B-string (traverse) design and the chambering wraps the notes with a degree of air or a natural breath which gives the guitar's voice a spatial dimension.
Mike Pope offered his views on the design and I agree with him that it does make a disernable difference, a view not shared by all but it's all healthy. As you say, there's been alot of interest in the 33" scale and for good reason "It's sooo comfortable." Olive, thanks again for steering me in the right direction.
A 33" scale B, compared to a 34 or 35" B will always feel/sound different, it's like comparing a baby-grand to a Borsendorf, not the best analogy, but I think you know what I mean. I wanted this bass to be as compact as possible and apart from it's weight (it's a little on the heavy side) it's very comfortable.

This belonged to a customer of mine. Like the pickguard or not, it's a great bass.
I sat in on a 10 piece Latin Band performance and it never got lost with all the horns, percussionists and keyboard player.
The Viceroy shape almost seems like a melding of the emperor and monarch design. I like it a lot!
No, I don't really notice any difference when I'm playing them. Looking at them, the shape difference isn't as subtle as it might seem. The Viceroy is a little thicker in the waist, much like me. The body is also about an inch longer and a half-inch wider, not so much like me. The offset on the Viceroy is quite a bit more subtle than that of the Emperor. That's what Mike Pope was going for - something between the Monarch and the Emperor. I think he nailed it.
I had a chance to play the Viceroy at practice today with my acoustic trio. I had to tame it a little bit to get it to fit like my Emperor does - no boost in the mids, even a little cut on some songs. Certainly no bridge pickup. I can get similar sounds to the Emperor with the judicious application of subtle EQ, so I'm going to play the Viceroy at my gig on Saturday.
I'll try to do some sound clips Friday or Sunday. I'm even thinking about putting new strings on the Emperor, even though the ones on it are only two years old. Then I've got to decide what lines to play. Maybe a walking line from Robert Cray's "Across the Line." My apologies to all you slappers and typewriter types. I can't do that stuff.

That's a beauty of a bass. I tinkered with the idea of getting the Viceroy and I would've gone the whole way, slideing pup, removable fingerboard extension etc, it must be great to flip between 60's & 70's spacing and the variations between.
Q. Who's the wizard at the shop that strung your bass? I love the fact that all the pegs face the same direction, if you find out how it's done and you don't mind passing on the secret I'd love to try it.

A man after my own heart....60s spaced pickups! I'm doing the same on mine (although I'm getting the Duncan dual coils)! Have you picked your holly top? Is it going to be pure white? I was just wrestling with whether to go with the extended headstock...decided to stay with the modern 2+3. Sounds like your is gonna be really unique. Can't wait to see it!
