The Monarch Standard weighs a bit more because of the Dual Coils PUPS which themselves add almost a half pound.

YYS are roughly 8.5 - 9 pounds.

Monarch Standards are roughly 9.0 - 9.5 pounds

What are the woods? I'm guessing mahogany body with rosewood FB? I think it's the same model that Will Cady uses in the Source Audio demo videos (which is actually how I came to fall for these basses). Seems to have a different finish, and a different carve for the bolt-on neck.

It is indeed one of the "New Standard" Monarchs that they made for a while. I've been in the process of registering it with Fodera and I was told that it was made in the shop in the 90's.

The body woods are a heavily quilted maple top on a mahogany body. The neck is three piece maple with an Indian Rosewood fretboard and an ebony cap on the headstock. I don't think the finish is different, it's just been buffed to shiny from being being played. The neck felt a touch thicker than the Yin Yang Standard I owned, but it was very, very similar.

The thought of selling it was killing me. This bass just fits me perfectly and its broken in like an old bassball glove.

Thanks for the response Michael. I'm really glad you got to keep that bass..it's pretty special. For a while I was trying to figure out what body wood was used, as I loved the sound of it. It is a very dark mahogany, which looks like walnut. You've solved a big puzzle for me, and probably helped me decide on the body wood I want for the monarch I have on order. I have never personally heard a 4 string (built with the same woods) sound exactly like a 5 (and vice versa). That said, they are tonally very, very similar in that the woods and specs were designed on both instruments to be exceptional all around instruments with loads of tonal possibilities.

Between the combination of an Ash body and Pau Ferro FB coupled with the very flexible Preamp and Dual Coil Pickups, there are loads and loads of tones waiting to be dialed in...

So, this is a long winded way of saying that "yes" they are very similar tonally despite the difference in body shapes.

For anyone attending either Bass Player Live or NAMM (in January), we will have examples of both with us...

That Imperial II of yours was actually the bass that most inspired me to go with a walnut top. It's my favorite of all the crotch walnut Foderas on the site. Gorgeous!

Mine's nothing to be embarrassed about, though! It just went to it's 8th gig, and I am starting to realize that lots of people are going to be asking me "What kind of wood is that?" for a long time!

One of the reasons I went with the walnut top was I thought it would pair well with this other piece of claro walnut I own:

hey,

if anyone is interested just came across a 98 aj6 in the l.a. craigslist. (not mine). it's a few years later than what i'm looking for, so have at it. do a search there if you're interested. the owner didn't have pics, so i don't know if it's a single or double cut.
