Well, I already knew Fodera in the 1990's, and I even bought one in 1994 (a six string Emperor). Unfortunately, during a burglary in 1997, it was stolen from me. That was the moment I decided to play double bass exclusively...

Well, I emailed him anyway.

Starting to hone in on the spec for the bass I have in the queue. Originally that was going to be another 4-string Monarch but the MGS has altered my world view. Then steubig brought his fretli over and that opened my eyes. So now, after a brief exchange with Jason, we're thinking:

5-string Imperial (MG shape, though still pondering Monarch Elite), E-C
33" scale
17.5mm bridge spacing
unlined ebony fingerboard
ash neck
chambered walnut body, walnut tone block (maybe alder?)
Hipshot D-tuner
black hardware

Top indeterminate. I'm going to go non-solid so there might be some interesting candidates.

Now the only burning question is do I order what amounts to a MG Sig to replace the MGS due to my love of ebony f/b and aesthetic desires as I usually prefer a medium to darker top.

*sigh* If I do the latter then the koa Monarch would probably have to go. I'm trying to hit some savings goals before the boy starts college so something's gotta give

I'm going down to Rob Allen's shop later today to talk about a similar build. If that pans out I'd likely sell my Deep 4 and end up with a fretted/fretless pair of Foderas, 33" E-C and a fretless RA 33" E-C. The only outlier would be my YYD which would be the 4-string "stunt bass" or what I bring to a blues gig

Yes, legit. Jason confirmed it previously. It is a special run of instruments for that particular store.

This was on the Classifieds last month, I read a few guys say the Extended B was the downside, other says the Koa Top is, well they're not... I'm very happy with it, replaced the Bridge with New Fodera Bridge, PU Covers are new from Fodera, made new Rosewood ramp for it, no ding or major scracth, everything works as it should.

Thank you to Jason for the specs, a friend of mine asks Jason about the spec, not all the spec are there (made in 2001), quite a unique spec IMO.

- Emperor I Bolt On, One piece Alder body
- Curly Koa Top
- One Piece Quarter Sawn Ash Neck (I have compared with other Ash necked Basses and even Ash wood blanks I have, and I'm 100 percent sure this is Ash.
- Rosewood Fingerboard.
- Dual Coil PU, Pre-2010 Preamp
- Extended 'B', making the Low 'B' more controllable, loved it.
- 35 inch scale, 19 mm spacing currently set up.
- Born on April 19 2001

This one is very very warm compared to other Foderas I played, perfect for any Band/Music setting, the dual/single coil switch is the only thing I ever touched while playing. Wonderful!

Dear Jason,

I have a question which I have been wondering about. I remember you saying that the MS4 will be the last addition to the standard line, as then : Fodera will be pretty much running on full capacity production wise.

My question : with new luthier and new employes added to be able to cope with production : Is vinny Fodera still touching/working/setting up ALL the basses which are coming out of the shop?

This could be seen as opening a can of worm... but please believe me when i say it's not...

Emperor 5 deluxe is still rocking :-D

I opted for 34" scale, solid quilt top, walnut body, ash block, maple neck, ebony board. The bass will be tuned e to c to start. Focus of this design was clear articulate tones.

This didn't exist in the newborns so last night I threw this image together.

You noticed that...cool. Yeah I'm a 34" guy. I can do everything I need to and keep the tone I like.

I'm liking 33", though my muscle memory is still somewhat entrenched at 34" scale. I never pick up my 35" scale instrument. I'm still thinking that my goal will be to migrate to 33" for everything except the YYD. I have to admit that I'm curious about a 33" scale 4-banger as well. I'd love to play the latest Tony Grey instrument and see how that feels. I'm wondering about slapability on the 17.5mm spaced 4 as the MGS is a bit tricky for slap/pop. Actually slap is easy, but pop there isn't a lot of space to dig in. That could be a message for me to work on technique.
