likewise i find it very hard to really feel a 35-inch neck. my hand/brain connection "knows" where everything is *supposed* to be, but it ain't.

i think the term "muscle memory" is probably a less-than-accurate term that describes the connection/feedback system.

but then, i'm not a scientist, i'm just a country bass player

I actually am totally with you on all of that- the less difference between instruments, the better. I'm tempted to get rid of my very good sounding roscoe fretless 35" since I'm only playing 34"'s otherwise.

FWIW, I somehow or the other am a paid professional country bass player, and only a student scientist . . . I play bass to make money and read neuroscience for fun!

Yes, we know more about the ocean depths than our own brains, that's for sure. :smug:

Now, back to Foderas, what do you think about the Emp 5 as brighter bass compared to my imperial? Or what about that AJ? Seems up your alley.

All of us in the shop are working towards a time when Vinny will not touch any instruments. Sadly, this is the inevitable way that things must unfold...Vinny is human and he is in his later 50's. This is why we have an amazing bunch of younger people in the shop all spending as much time as possible learning the Fodera way...

That said, thankfully, that time is probably a very, very long way off and Vinny is still very much involved with building instruments. Does he touch every one? No. That said no one, including me and Joey, can tell which he worked on and which he did not...and that's the point, right?

Is he still involved with every new Fodera? Yes.

We just kind of personally are really loving the aesthetic look of it. It is a bit more dimensionally stable than flatsawn material although it's frankly overkill (in terms of cost:benefit) and not necessary when it comes down to neck stability.

We probably not will always be able to get / use quartersawn material (the supply of it is somewhat limited and unpredictable), but for now we can and so we'll keep riding that horse for a while...

P.S. Gotta go...time for our second set. This is a first BTW, being on TB in between sets (at least for me)...

We just announced the last new model in the Standard Line -- the Monarch 4 Standard, this past week.

Our 4 Standards are:

Monarch 4
Yin Yang (4 strings)
Emperor 5
Matt Garrison

Going forward, we will be rotating though 15-30 piece build runs for each. In general we are set up to build between 30-60 of each per year with a total production of Standard instruments each year roughly in the 180-200 range.

We will probably also make some changes to future runs of each...perhaps changing the top and/or some of the tone woods. Just to have fun and keep things interesting. So, in a way, yes, they are "limited runs" in that none of them has been, or will be, in constant production and some of the specs will change with future runs...

Be warned: Status Graphite bass being played with a pick!
While this is definitively off topic, I still have to share it.

Besides my Foderas I play various Status Graphite basses (one of them as a first owner for over 26 years, so I was playing Status basses before Hellmut and for example Mark King of Level 42 adopting them).

Hellmut Hattler is performing Cameos "Word Up" together with Isabelle Ngnoubamdjum (no typos here). I think this is just an amazing performance and BTW I think his sound is cool although it is not a Fodera and does not sound nowhere near what a Fodera does sound like.

I've always kept a bolt on with a brighter tone in my arsenal for slap and more aggressive playing, and even though the Imperial is working great, I still would like a second axe. I have a sadowsky that I'm about to part with and have room for a second fretted bass. The imperial is on the slightly darker side of things with it's Brazilian rosewood board and mahogany tone block, even though it has a punchy ash body.

I keep thinking the Emp standard 5 would be great since it's in the same ballpark as my imperial but bolt on, brighter maple top and brighter pau ferro board. I don't want to go as far bright as a 70's J bass ash/maple board combo, so this might be just the ticket.

Basses with ebony/ash usually sound to bright to me, like Tom Kennedy's signature bass. My Sadowsky is ebony/alder and I would've thought the alder might have taken the edge off the board, but it's actually pretty bright, though of course Roger's instruments have a very different DNA makeup and the board seems to impart more tone than on a Fodera, IME.

The other combo, then, that has caught my eye for some time is found in a used AJ double cut 5 bolt-on with a walnut body, ebony board, and ebony top. I know the ebony is going to impart more clarity and bell like tones than the pau ferro board, but I'm not really sure what to expect from an all walnut body and if that might tamp it down from getting too zingy. The bass is here and there's some great sounding links to some youtube clips. I've always thought this was a great Fodera tone.

Any thoughts one this walnut/ebony AJ vs the Emp Standard? I would think the AJ would have tighter lows and maybe a little more zing than the Emp Standard, though the emp standard seems have a lot of range and it makes so much sense to me why they designed it the way they did. On the other hand, the emp could also be too close sounding to my Imperial to really justify as a second axe.

You just prefer the Monarch to the single cut? I can't really find a fault with the MGS other than maybe aesthetic preferences. I love the Monarch but I think that the single cut actually has an impact on sound/stability/etc. And if you're just now ordering the Monarch you'll have a long wait. Best to get the MGS now then flip it before the Monarch is done :D
