You're going to love it! They are fantastic basses all around. I picked up a dual mid pot from Otto and it is a really nice addition to the tonal flexibility. Id highly recommend it.

There are a number of steps that must be taken when switching from EMG's to the kind of set-up that you have. They include shielding the PUP cavities, grounding the bridge and PUP cavities and making adjustments to the preamp to account for the impedance differences between the two kinds of PUP's (Active vs. Passive).

You are welcome to call the shop and we can talk you through it anytime. There will be a nominal bench charge, but it will probably save time and ensure that you get it right.

I've never been a fan of the EMG's. They always sounded way over compressed and unnatural to me. The lows were too tight and the highs too rolled off IMO. They also never sounded nearly as good as my passive basses when going through a tube amp. They were perfectly silent, which was awesome.

Now the bass has truly thick lows and a much more present upper midrange. The pickups sound great in passive mode and the Pope Flexcore I'm running does a great job of boosting gain whilst keeping the character of the pickups.


I have been having some trouble with grounding however. The bass had no ground cable run from the bridge originally, so I had to have a luthier do that for me. When I first hooked the pickups up, they were out of phase with each other. I flipped the wires on the P pickup. The out of phase problem went away, but there was still a lot of buzz and the P pickup sounded very muddy.

I switched the Fralin around instead, tightened the pots down to the bass and used a star washer and screw to help ground the bridge wire, an unshielded braided wire, on its way to the preamp. I didn't solder a separate wire from copper shielding to the preamp. Also, the pickup cavities are unshielded. I'm going to shield them, but I'm a little worried trying to dig the foam out that Fodera put in there. I know that the cavities being unshielded can cause buzz, but it's buzzing more than my completely unshielded basses ever did.

If anyone has any advice to track down the grounding problem, I'm all ears. I'm going to open it back up tonight and make sure none of the circuit boards are touching the copper shielding.

Other than the buzzing, the pickups sound fantastic and I'm very, very happy I made the switch! :bassist::bassist::bassist::bassist:

How cheap is that brand new 11lb E5S in stock at Fodera? That is a crazy great deal! Someone on TB needs to buy that ASAP.

I am sooooo tempted to buy that as a back up. If I was doing studio work, I would have pulled the trigger.

How many bass manufacturers would give a substantial discount on a bass that ended up being a bit too heavy? No need to answer that one.

E5S #78 has landed - due to the benefits of living within 1-day ground shipping from Brooklyn. After I let her warm up, it was hard to stop playing. Ever so slightly shallower neck profile than the NYC. Fantastic tone from the whole package. There is NOTHING standard about this instrument. Got to share the case opening with Diana, my wife, who is also a musician. She agrees that this is a beautiful instrument. I know that the customs offer other things, the Imperial sings its siren call, but for now, and for the forseeable future, I have a pair of basses that inspire me to make things happen. We'll see what transpires next... :)

You're exactly right, you shouldn't be upset about not waiting for the heavy one. Owning a fodera is about getting exactly what you want or need out of a bass, and it sounds like you've got it with that one. That's the reason I wont buy the heavy one, it's nothing close to what I would need out of a bass, but it sure is tempting at that price. Enjoy it, the best part of a new bass is the inspiration they bring and foderas seem to bring a lot of that.
