I agree. That's call maintenance.
I drive an Audi. And play a Fodera. Life is good to me.

I've been off of talkbass (still browsing, not posting) for nearly six years, and the fodera club threads have made me lookup my password through an old email just to type this post.. I do not think I've wanted something so bad in my life. Plus, there is so little hate and so much help.. Gonna start a fund!

yes. i got tired of preamps in 94 or so.

partially cause there's always a new "best" one coming out every few years, but mostly because i feel like the basses just sound more wide-open without.

also, i tend to eq the crap out of the amp, whereas most guys do it at the pre and leave the amp "flat" . . . or so i think.

i know i'm in a minority here . . .

Not at all; I like your reasoning. Day by day I'm leaning more toward a setup like yours.

The only thing that's keeping me from going completely passive and handling my EQ requirements through an amp is the need to quickly change the sound of the bass onstage, and having those controls onboard is real handy.

Always a compromise, ain't it? ;)

That being said, my Fodera is the first bass I've ever had where minimal EQ is really needed. Mostly I just have the bass added at about 25%. And it sounds flat-out awesome (and musical). If I had to live with one onboard pre, it'd be the Pope.

I agree. I think you just got unlucky with with the pickups. I'm not sure about the above suggestion for a Nordy p pickup seeing as mixing two brands has already gone wrong for you once. A Fralin p might be just the ticket, or like I said the other day, try the Duncan's, especially if you already have a lightning rod p pickup lying around.

I had a weird experience today. I was in a car coming back from an English lesson with one of my colleagues, a lady called Galina. The driver who drives us around on Tuesdays and Thursdays is a professional guitarist and well into jazz. She and him are good friends, and we got chatting about music, and I find out that she and Vadim Medved are old friends. I Never would have had any idea. They studied together in music college back in the 80s. Small world. She told me he has something like 15 basses at home which she saw when she visited him NY 5 years ago. Cool discovery for 10:30am on a Thursday.

what I really love about the Pope pre is that it still really sounds like the bass in passive mode, even when adding some EQ. I've been playing my Imperial in passive mode a lot and I love the sound. But sometimes live, in certain rooms, it just doesn't cut through or fill up space the way I want it to. And I always leave the amp EQ flat, especially when I'm on the road and using backlined gear. Just flip on the ol' pre, give it a little bass and a tiny bit of mids and highs and suddenly the mix sounds perfect, while still sounding like MY BASS.

With some of my other basses and basses I've owned in the past, they may sound great in passive mode, but then the pre just totally changed the sound of the bass and takes over....then I would find myself drawn to a certain bass just because I liked the way the pre sounds live. Now I have a bass that I like every aspect of :)

maybe he is playing his own designs that were built by Vinny or as written on the pic below - designs made by Vadim.... wasn't there a green 6 with Fanned Frets some years ago for sale on ebay ? If I remember right it was also made by Vadim...

and I just see that the green one has the same shape like the one in the middle on the guys pic :) - so I guess it's a Vadim shape :)

Id like to see the pope preamp have sweepable mids instead of the internal switches.

I dislike batteries in basses after having a good quality battery leak in one of basses-not good. But i do like an on board pre buffering the signal at the start of the cable run.

Alembics attempts to provide external power were noble but kinda clunky.

Tradeoffs...
