Would be awesome to have a sliding pickup model in the shop as a demo. Then when you have it dialed they mark and cut your custom ...

I routed a bunch of locations on a bass i built and there was one great sweet spot.

I think that's the point of music isn't it? The instruments are tools to speak your voice. Not instruments that use you to speak their voice.

No, definitely not- that is for someone who knows they want and need insane flexibility. Really expensive (rightly), and once you figure out what you want you'll probably end up leaving it in one spot anyway.

You just need to do a bit of homework, and maybe more than that, take some time to figure out exactly what you need before ordering (ideally).

Just go listen to as many sound samples as you can find, or better yet go and play everything you can find.

I tend to prefer 60's for the bridge pickup usually.

Growing up listening to guys like MG, Janek, Victor, etc., I always thought, "man these guys are killin but that Fodera sound just isn't my thing." Years later, after owning a couple Foderas and finding the one that really fits my style, I realize just how versatile they are. Took me a while to get used to the fact that the imperials can't really sound like Fenders, but I'm getting to the point where I just don't care because this is my sound now.

The other night I did a hip-hop/reggae session for some signed artist in NYC. I brought my Imperial and my Alleva KBP5 w/ flats. I A/B'd both, and everyone in the room pointed at the Imperial! I wish I could post the track (I'm contractually obligated NOT to) cause you wouldn't believe how fat I got this Imperial sounding! It really can do just about everything! Still listening to it in disbelief that that's my Fodera on there!

Let us know when the track becomes public.

That's a good idea, but 90%(guess) of their customers are probably not in a position to go to the shop to do that.

What are the woods on your bass?
That can be a factor in where you place the bridge pup. The Tobias pup placement may have worked on the Tobias, but may not be best for this bass.

Alder body, ash tone block, 5 piece birdseye/flame neck, pink ivory fretboard. Buckeye top.

My guess is that they will put the bridge pup in the 70's position by default with those specs. I have mahogany body with ash tone block with pup's that way...blended they sound very balanced, and soloing the bridge gives a nice growl.

i love the insane flexibility part of it. i think i'd use it all the time.

... which is why I ordered my Viceroy with a static rear pickup in the '70s position. I know what I like and it worked out perfectly for me. It saved me a major chunk of change, too.

That was a joke...MG spacing is a blend of 60's and 70's...

I went through the same dilemna with my build. I thought about all the spacing options 60's, 70's, Single pup in AJ position, Lincoln Goines position, Tom Kennedy config and then I shot the idea to Olive Fodera & Jason of having the back-pup closer to the bridge & the neck-pup in AJ position.

Jason got back to me and said after discussion with Joey it could be done but given the bass was 33" scale, they couldn't guarantee that I or even they'd be pleased with the tonal result. In the end I let them choose and I think we settled on 70's position and I'm more than pleased with the result.

Had I been able to hear the results of my pup config idea, who knows..maybe I would've changed my mind, but they gave me the best advice possible.

I sorta want the old Tobias pickup placement. A little further back to the bridge, and a little closer back to the neck.

But I don't understand all the sound dynamics of placements.
