Dag, 20%, I should have jumped on it. If it was a monarch body with 35 inch scale, I would have hoped on it
So I have had my Monarch 5 Deluxe for just over 2 weeks and I am still nothing short of amazed. The bass is flawless, plays effortlessly and sounds great. I am loving the mahogany body with ebony fretboard combo. It sounds exactly as I had hoped. I have been playing more than ever as I just can't put the bass down.
I also spent a lot of time A/Bing the Monarch and my E5S over the last week. I have to say that I like the overall tone of the Monarch better but the E5S is definitely no slouch. The E5S actually has a slightly warmer bottom end than the Monarch which surprised me a bit.
The set neck/dovetail Deluxe is my favourite type of construction by far. I prefer the feel over both the bolt on and neck thru and damn, it looks great.
Lastly, I am so happy I went with the no charge curly walnut top. It looks stellar.

Nice to know I'm not alone.. At some point I'll take the plunge and get a fretless but not a Fodera; at this stage that would be insane.
Absolutely! I'll need extra help like lined frets but I do like a blank finger board. I'm contemplating something like the Fbass f/board - blank up to the 12th fret and then inbetweenie dots beyond the 12th.. Anyone tried the inbetween dots thing? Is it any better than or worse than the lines??

Absolutely! Sadly, there are only so many hours in the day and so much time for getting good at things. Now, if I only had a 36 hour day...

fwiw lines throw me off. Typically an unlined board will have the side dots at the "fret" positions. That is what I'm used to and always have found to be the best visual cue - beyond that it is all ear and muscle memory, which comes from a *lot* of practice. Some things I can do pretty well on fretless, other things (e.g. chords, 5ths) can get ugly
undoubtedly, and i knew that was the case with people of a certain age.
i was lucky to start doing fretless when i was 16 (which is long, long time ago).
i prefer unlined.
4ths are harder for me than 5ths.

I agree. They throw me off too. Staring at the fb is not helpful. When I took up fretless I decided I was going to play nothing else for a year. I backed up a lot of national touring artists during this time and none of them commented that I was playing fretless. I was going for an upright sound, not the Jaco thing. I have small hands and I found that using upright fingering made it relatively easy.I did spend a lot of hours practicing and stopping at random to check my intonation with a tuner. Scary at first!
I've been playing fretless for 31 years, the first 5 or 6 without lines. Then when I ordered a Pentabuzz, I agreed to lines as that was what was common for Michael Pedulla. I found that once you know your instrument...i.e. where notes lie in relation to the lines....the lines help in playing double-stops, triple-stops, etc. Of course your ears are the boss.
PS....the Pentabuzz is long gone....now mainly my Wals and a Zon TJ for my fretless work.

One more comment on lines. I bought a used Rob Allen MB2 about 12 years ago with a rosewood lined fb. I sent it to Rob and he built me a Deep 5 neck with an unlined ebony fb. The difference in the sound was drastic. Rob told me that he felt that cutting into the fb to inlay lines degraded the sound and sustain. I don't know if anyone else feels that way.
In my case "Everything" sounds ugg!! Literally every interval beyond a semi-tone is cringe worthy, but I wanna try it. Did you start out with an unlined board and therefore the lines seem unnatural? When you say dots, you mean the usual side markers at the 3-5-7-9 & 12th frets right?
