Fodera Club Part XXVI

I've just played FL in some pretty serious situations with quite a few name musicians for 45 yrs now

I don't care what you play or prefer - but I do think the obsession (sorry that's how I see it in a lot of FL threads - maybe not here) comes from a different place. An attachment to the visual effect of a 'clean' FB does not translate musically/logically

since this IS the Fodera thread I'll say this - the only Fodera I have currently (having had 5 over the years) is the Mother of the Bass of Doom - an Imp Elite 5 FL 36"

it sucks up soooo much sonic space that it must be dialed back and compressed when recording (and I hate compression) - it seriously overpowers even grand pianos in saturation when you look at the wave file

playing this wonderful bass live, I really appreciate the lines, even after 4 decades of ear training

no harm, no foul please

I chickened out of making my next custom a fretless which was how it was initially speced. I love playing fretless but couldn't commit to spending large on a bass that I might not have to a ton of gigs that require it. The relatively small resale market was the final straw. My current build (Nov) will have a red oak neck with ebony board (It was partially completed for my fretless build when I was at Fodera a few weeks ago, so I decided just to fret it), mahogany body and spalted mango top. It will be a killer bass and I am working with Joey and Jason to find me other fretless options.

fretlesses make up less than 10% of the market so the demand is slim

I try not to stray too far into the TB wilderness, I've seen a few people getting flamed for little reason and it wasn't pretty.
The Mother of the bass of Doom...sounds mean. Wasn't compression supposed to be good for the soul..:0)

Guys Glenn put my order in with Jason. Emperor Deluxe 5,Alder body, single coils in sixties position, Brazilian board with Tulip inlays ,34 scale ,and Crotch Walnut top. The due date is late August early September. Will post a picture of the Walnut top tomorrow.

My Emperor fretless has lines and dots.... because it used to me a fretted Bass for 6 years first ;) - haven't regret the change a minute - it sings like a bird :)

Normally I would have gone with a blank fretboard...

Is there any posibility to hear this bass you play ?
I would love to hear a Fodera 36' FL.

By the way I challenged my self by selling all my fretted basses, and just keep my Fbass fretless and my Rob Allen Deep.
The objectif was to get better on fretless.
My next fretted will be my Fodera coming this spring.

Be a good fretless player is a real vocation. Need a lot of work.

I have some recordings on another machine

just need to check the format and the best way to post

it is, without question, the baddest FL bass I've ever heard (and that's going some - I've had them all)

During the Q&A he said something like "the fact that your always a micro tone away from being out and when your not you somehow have to bring the note back in is what excites me about the fretless, that's where it's at for me." Some kid had shouted a couple times "play some Jaco" and Gary kind of ignored it, but he raised a hand and Gary took the question; but he said "No, I won't play anything by Jaco Pastorious out of respect, it's not that I don't know his music, but because of who he was and what he did for the instrument." Gary went on to prove a point because what came next was just magical, he squeezed every nuance at of that bass. Big respect for Willis.

I love Willis, but come on- I've seen him play "The Chicken" live before, and last I saw, there were two versions of him playing it on youtube!

Your right, he did play it but he pulled some new tunes outta the bag, I can't recall the titles but they we're quite varied. He had the new (then) Aguilar (tone hammer 500 + 2 x SL12's) with his one man show set-up. I suppose if someone say's play like somebody else (for the sake of wanting to make a comparison) you kinda go all out show them I'm different, that's him & I'm me, my own person. He certainly did that.
