I talked to Joey about a similar idea and we ended up with two 3 way switches so either DC can be split to inner, outer or parallel!

I can imagine if Tal is really looking for that single coil J sound in a exactly 60's or 70's position that using the pup she wants where she wants it could be a good solution for the bridge.

I had a custom jazz six made with another builder and here was my bright idea: I have splittable dual coils and installed them so the outer coils are in the Seventies jazz position when split. Worked out amazing well... it's a killer Seventies six string single coil jazz that really drops the hammer with all coils on. I have a single 3 way coil tap switch that chooses all coils-dual bridge single neck-all singles. Simple and very effective.

i think you will like the c string a lot more if you spend some time getting to know it. in other words, try doing something like spending a little time every day playing *only* the c string and see how to get the most out of it. just an idea.

First gig tonight with the 6'er. Theater show where we play an opening set, then play tunes in and out of the pieces (along with some occasional sfx/mood bits). Opened the night solo, playing and singing Suicide is Painless (MASH theme). Essentially comping guitar chords up high, then one-by-one the rest of the band came up and joined in successive verses as I moved to a traditional bass line. Then full band stuff, but again playing baritone guitar vibe behind Streets of Laredo, the guitar intro to Santeria, and dub on Because I Got High.

This bass...I actually had to dial down some edge on the WD800. The bass is not laidback or polite at all when you lean in. It will play sweet though - we did I Can't Make You Love Me, and I was happily laying down fat half and whole notes behind our vocalist (who killed it - she always does). Palm mute is crazy good. May actually be more articulate than the YYD.

I wasn't planning on another bass, but a fretless version of this exact spec...

Curious how you're getting along with that bridge position big rig Todd?

Two turned up the other day in a hock-shop in Edinburgh, Scotland! They are currently marked as 'Reserved', whatever that means. We've got the radar up back here, asking around if they're nicked. Any of you guys know any UK users who might have 'lost' two of these basses, hit them up!

I can't remember the player's name but he used to play in a band called Little Buddha, from Fife I think.
Was it Grant Tyrie? Something like that?
They definitely are, or used to he his basses.

So far I love it. I still tend to be on the neck pickup most of the time, but am finding myself doing a bit more 50/50. Mostly what I like is when I go to the bridge pickup, I can run either parallel or series and not feel the need to add any bass. With the YYD, going to the J pickup kinda calls for some bass boost unless I'm trying to do something very open/exposed.

I can't find a single thing I'd change on this bass.

Well, I went through a number of iterations to get to this point, both Fodera and other builders ;-)

But great to have what looks to be a long-term relationship.

Similar journey. Even doing the same bass twice but with different body and FB .

My final sweet spot is also a monarch with koa top and walnut/alder TB. My fb is Brazilian RW however . Such a great formula

so, wondering if people have experience with fingerboard woods that are different from the usual ebony/maple/pau ferro/rosewood stuff.

if you do, and would care to comment on sound, finish, feel, etc., i'd be happy to hear your viewpoints.

Haven't been around for a few day. Lots of activity.
I had a very interesting bass a few years back. 5-string unlined fretless. Ash body, Cocobolo top and headstock veneer, Katalox finger board and ramp.

The Katalox FB was cool. Hard to compare to others. Feel (to me) was in Pau Ferro territory.
Bass had loads of mwah and sustain. TI flats.

I think with the Big Rigs the issue is that the bridge pickup doesn't sound like a traditional bridge pickup. For me this is a good thing. I like the Jbass or PJ sound of the neck and bridge pickups together but I rarely like the back J pickup on it's own. And when I do use it there's generally a lot of tone rolloff and some EQ applied, bass in particular.

I like the Big Rig in the bridge position precisely because it doesn't sound that far off from a Big Rig in the neck. Great pickups IMO.

And now a word from the Dark Side. I only use the J pup. Plenty of bottom, mids and highs. The EMG's are so hot that places that have super expensive, sensitive boards require that I really cut the output. Simply the best sounding bass ever.

I don't disagree with you @oldfretless as I've recently been going solo J on my YY5. It is VERY tight and smooth but gets incredibly aggressive when digging in... kinda jack of all trades -ish. However, the solo P while taking a smidge of the mids out and playing with a pick is truly magical (and I'm not really a pick player). As always, it's situational.

Got somethin headin my way next week...
