Fodera Club Part XXVII

I’ve finally joined the ranks of Fodera ownership with a Ryan Martinie Standard. The bad boy is serial number #1. I’ve been a huge fan of Ryans music for a decade and after dragging my wife to Asheville to see his band Soften The Glare play and talking about these basses constantly, my wife surprised me with an unbelievable gift. This thing is crazy good. After playing Warwick for years, I’d call this a distant cousin. The preamp really dials in a wide range of tones.

That is a fabulous gift! Totally jealous. Ryan's such a great player and a dynamic stage personality, too.

I'm curious to know how you feel about the string spacing on this one. These are 16.5mm, correct? Does it feel tight?

I don’t have the biggest hands, and have always preferred tighter spacing. This is pretty much matched to the Warwick Thumb in terms of neck measurements, so it feels like home.

I see my p-bass is back on the market (Reverb). I miss it and wish I could buy it back :D. I can't believe two people bought it and instantly sold it - such a wonderful bass. I wonder if people buy it hoping it will be way better than a Fender P, and get disappointed that it's only a bit better? I'm pretty set on moving away from 34" though.

Sound like to you should order that 32 scale P :)

Hi all, anybody know what the capacitor value is in the passive tone control on a Fodera?

Sounds like .022uf or .033uf - leaves more of the sound intact than some tone controls I've had, which suits me fine. Mostly just curious.

I've tried Googling and looking inside the bass, and even despite having created several bass circuits from scratch I can't seem to find it.

As far as I remember the Pope preamp has 2 capacitors, a .022uf and a .047uf. You can use the jumpers on the preamp to select either, or combine them. I'm not sure what the standard setting is when they leave the shop, but mine came with the jumper on the .047uf. I swapped it to the .022uf as I preferred the tone that way. Perhaps Joey chooses depending on each individual bass's characteristics with brighter sounding ones getting a darker capacitor.

Here's a link:
Fodera preamp jumper settings 05-10-10 [Compatibility Mode] (shopify.com)

This is for the most recent custom preamp: I don't know what they use for the standard or the older Pope.

Wow, thanks, that's amazing! I wish I'd known about this!

Most of my bass gigs these days are in a band where I exclusively play my Rob Allen Mouse fretli. But when Steel Jam fires up, the YYD gets to come out and play. A few weeks ago down in LA, Tom Scott sitting in on sax. This bass still kills, and in fact is the only fretted bass I own at this point.

Awesome cover of a great Steely Dan tune Todd! Loved the guitar/sax duel toward the end. Nice bass tone too.
