Fodera in Gospel

Great groove! How you avoid hitting other strings on a 6 has always been something of a mystery to me. It’s like watching a magician.
If you watch that recent post of Oteil playing his Dire Wolf you can see up close how he does it. Barely any movement on the plucking fingers, and they approach the strings at a 45 degree angle. Very light touch. I wouldn't be able to do that, not enough fine motor control on those fingers, so I'll stick with my 4 strings.

Does he ever play the C string.
Maybe not in the posted example. I pretty much always play a five - even on gigs where I don’t need the extended range. But I’m most comfortable on my five and find it easier to stick with that bass rather than switch back and forth according to how many strings I’ll need.

The Fodera sounds good. Nothing wrong with that tone, but...

Does anybody else have a problem with every note he uses vibrato on being bent sharp? Vibrato is a cool thing, but Mr. Lee never lets the fundamental pitch ring and immediately bends notes sharp. I was not able to listen to him for very long.

Of course, this is one man's opinion, and I am not the MD on this gig. Gouche, Raines, Sharay Reed... you will not hear them doing this.

Well, he certainly gets his value out of his tuning pedal, which he probably has to use every 30 minutes or so?

My Sadowsky is still in tune after about 2 weeks of play time, since I don't bend.

It's both amusing and disturbing why so many musicians, especially bassists, get bothered enough to have make (primarily negative) comments about 6 string basses.
Seriously, who cares? It's a tool of personal choice. It's another topic in a long line of other completely pointless debates such as:
Picks vs fingers
Rounds on a fretless
Genres for fretless bass
Learning theory/reading
And my personal favorite, If you don't own a Fender you're "wrong".

Now, before people get their knickers all twisted up, it does not matter what someone thinks or does except to them. Read and digest that slowly.

And while some topics can be beneficial once, the endless arguing and bickering about these and other topics does nothing but divide, which I guess allot of people really get off on. If people choose to limit their knowledge and experience based on someone else's unwritten rules, then so be it. They only hurt themselves and no one else. If after they try things and still don't care for them, then they had the experience and that is a valid opinion. But it's just that, an opinion.

I'm positive there will be some that bother to read this and can't wait to argue. Ok, whatever.
My Opinion, rather observation here, is stated only to possibly cause some thinking to happen and maybe stop a few more divisive statements from being made. Thats all.

I was thinking the same thing. Every somewhat sustained note is getting bent. But, he's obviously a great player. I have a feeling that he could make just about any bass work in that context.

I'll admit, that is one thing lacking in my playing: I never bend strings. Some vibrato on a fretless can be nice. On a fretted, I want to hear the note as in-tune as possible. I don't particularly like heavy vibrato in vocalists either, especially from those that cannot control it. And I am really not a fan of vocalists that have to slide into every note either.

Thanks for sharing! I have a bit of a habit of using vibrato that likely from my background playing keybass with a mod wheel for various hip-hop and R&B artists. I tend to doit more when I’m excited especially in the church band, though I use it much less on slower songs haha. If you watch my full two-hour set for my musical gig, you’ll notice I barely use it at all!

You don't need to play the C string or cross the 12th fret to make music. While I know we could shred, but I choose other ways to express. it’s not a jazz gig, after all. That said, I prefer the 6-string for its specific tonal body, which feels distinct from playing a 4-string bass.

Exactly brother!! At the end of the day, it’s just a tool. Why a standard guitar has 6 strings? who made that?

Nobody has to like 6-string basses, play them, or even understand why someone else chooses one. But acting like someone is “wrong” for using one is just unnecessary.

Music is already personal enough. Use what inspires you, make it sound good, and enjoy is the most important thing!
