Following the song vs. playing lowest freq notes

As someone said earlier in this thread, if it is a non-original, listen to a few recordings of the song. See what has worked. Quite possibly it has a groove going on the bass. As for the one note thing, even in old country music if the guitar was playing, say a C chord, the bass might be playing CGCGCG.

I play 5 string basses so I can start with the low C and move up to E. But sometimes the higher notes are better. Also it can vary whether it is a verse with vocals or a lead guitar solo.

Your second measure is G D G F E. Those notes aren't the best choice over the D chord. The G and the F in particular are going to clash with the F# in the chord.

He didn't say if any of those chords were maj, min ,dim etc ... so I assumed they were all in C major scale. C and D I used the C scale notes and for E I like the sound of G#.
