Double Bass Foot Kill switch Vs. Volume Pedal?

I'm glad the tuner-mute idea was brought up -- I'm at a much cheaper and simpler level with my amplification, but both my amp and my 2-channel powered PA have tuners and when the tuner is turned on with either of them, it does mute. I had always wondered why that is a feature of those tuners. That said, I also have a contact tuner mounted on my bridge all the time so I can use that and not be muted at the amp.

A more interesting question for me is when I don't use my amp but when I do DI, I have an onboard dual-channel pre-amp with which I can easily adjust volume or mute for either or both piezo channels... But if I use my onboard mic, there's no onboard or signal chain control for me, it feeds literally direct in, completely up to the FOH -- the mic is tremendously more arco-friendly, which is a big reason for having it, but I don't have an onboard pre-amp for it.

I would think a simple A/B box - with nothing plugged into "B" - would work just fine.

There's one thing which I have learnt from reading Josh's posts in the Broughton megathread which is worth mentioning in this thread:

If you plug a tuner into paralel output of your preamp, it may load down your piezo pickup...

If the output is not buffered this is true.

Is it just me, or why would anyone need or want anything with a battery, power supply, impedance etc etc, to just cut a signal?

In my experience, true bypass pedals tend to pop when you engage them; buffered pedals do not.

I don't know about other preamps, but paralel output on my EBS Microbass II preamp ("Link") is wired before buffer which makes it "not buffered" I guess...

Great buffer/preamp, tons of headroom for bass, next to zero distortion, you can set a volume for both channels, or use one channel as a mute/kill side, you get a really good DI, and it can run on phantom power as well.

perhaps also try with a plug in the B input which creates a short circuit (connect hot to ground). An open circuit may cause noise or buzzes in the amp / PA if the gain is up.

Just found this thread. For this application (for me) its a no brainer. D'addario makes a circuit breaker cable. The switch is on the jack. Works great for me and it's usually in arms length.
