For Tequila Lovers

I mentioned in my story from a week ago (above) that I picked up a bottle of the Tres Agaves reposado. I recommended it to some because I remembered loving it on the few occasions I had tried it previously (and it happened to be on sale at a great price at the moment), though frankly I didn't remember exactly what it was that I liked about it so much. Well, it didn't take me very long to go through that bottle, and now that I've been reminded I thought I'd share my thoughts about it.

As I've probably mentioned in several posts here, I'm mainly a blanco guy. The thing I most love about good tequila is the very thing that makes tequila different from everything else, and that's agave. I want big, bold, bright, fruity agave flavor to jump out of the glass and slap me across the face. That particular quality of course tends to diminish with aging, so reposados tend to have less of it and anejos less still. But, resposados can be aged anywhere from 1 to 12 months, which is a very large range in tequila time, and consequently they vary widely in the degree to which they retain big juicy agave flavor: Some are more blanco-like and others more anejos-like.

So to get to the point.... Tres Agaves is a reposado for blanco lovers like me -- indeed, the best I can remember ever having. It retains all of the big bold agave flavor as their blanco (which I buy often), while smoothing out the edges just a tad and adding just enough woody character to round out the flavor profile. You can tell just by the color, which is a very pale straw color much lighter than most repos. Unlike so many repos, in which you give up some of that agave goodness in exchange for other qualities, this one is IMHO the best of both worlds.

+1

OK, I realize that it is poor form to "+1" one's own post, but I can't help it. I stopped to pick up a bottle of something on my way to band practice the other night, and found this again at a sale price I couldn't pass up. And again I was blown away by how well it preserves the crisp, juicy agave punch of a good blanco, while spinning a variety of enjoyable-but-subtle flavors around it.

OK - here's where I am not soliciting bootlegging.
But I'm looking for a specific product that the PLCB in its limited vision has elected to exclude from Pennsylvania availability.
So if there were ah - some way - for someone to purchase said product and make it available to me, I'd find a way to make it worth your while...

Patron has a limited-edition David Yurman packaged Reposado.
I don't need the lecture on how Patron Reposados are overpriced - this isn't about the tequila, exactly. I want one. My research indicates it's about $70.

If someone in a nearby state where this is available were able to obtain a bottle and somehow make it available to me, I'd appreciate it. It seems to be available in New York which is, technically, right next door - but if you've ever driven in NYC you'll understand why this option is fairly far down on my list...

A PM would be nice if you're inclined to help me out with this admittedly irrational quest...

Tequila is the only liquor that I ever care to drink straight. I've had a lot of the popular anejos but the best I ever had was a special edition Milagro anejo. I think it was called centenario or something. I've not seen it since. Had a big blown glass agave in the bottom of the bottle like I've seen in a couple of other brands. A friend and I and a couple of others went through a bottle in a few days years back. I like Milagro in general.

Sorry, I don't think I can help. I don't think I can get it here in VA (which also has state-run liquor stores with a limited list), and I'm not exactly "nearby."

If you're in SEPA, why not take a short trip to Wilmington?

NTD! I decided to expand my horizons beyond the world of blancos, which I love. I'm not too fond of resposados, so I was nervous to try an anejo. After milling around in the liquor store for almost an hour and talking to the guy who worked there, I decided on this:

ShP7WLZl.jpg

It was $20 for 200ML. I found this one as I was preparing to check out with a much larger bottle of 100% Anos, which interestingly is owned by Beam, who also owns Makers Mark, Knob Creek, and several other alcohols. But that is another story/thread as they have also recently sold out to a Japanese company.

Anyway......the size is perfect for trying out a new tequila. I was afraid to end up with 500ML or 750ML of something I did not care for. I need to try it a few more times to get a full feel for the flavor and how it sits with me, but my initial reaction is "this smacks you in the mouth with it's bold flavors". Not as spicy as I like, but I need to give it more time. I'll have a more detailed report later.

ArtechnikA, I checked for your special Patron. No go at the stores I went to around here.

This is from the 'recommend some liquor' thread...

Hey Mike -- have you tried Camarena? Same (stupid-cheap) price as the Lunazul, at least where I live, but IMHO a bit better in both blanco and reposado categories.

This reminds me that I ought to revive that Tequila-Lover's thread from a while back. That was a pretty lively little thread...

I have not yet, but I want to. Since I declared to some friends my new found affinity for tequila, they have been bringing me bottles of the 'good stuff' as gifts when we have them over. Unfortunately, they always seem to think the 'good stuff' is Patron or Jose Cuervo. I have enough of that in my cabinets now to open my own tequila store. Once I use it all up, if I ever do, I will buy come Camarena. I also want to try Cazadores, mostly because I like the logo on the bottle.

Very clever idea moving this discussion over from the other thread: It was a potential hijack over there, but a welcome revival here. Well played, my friend.

First, glad to hear that you have friends who bring you bottles of tequila (or in some cases "tequila"). I need more friends like that....

Second, here's what I recommend you do -- IMHO and FWIW, of course:

1. Patron is quite good, albeit overpriced, so keep a bunch of that stocked to serve to friends and to enjoy occasionally on your own. If you have extra bottles, you can always grab a bottle to bring to some other friend's place, or otherwise "re-gift." I don't recommend spending your own money on it, but as long as you didn't have to pay for it, enjoy it and share it.

2. Assuming the Cuervo is the mixto "Especial," just pour it down the drain. Maybe it will help clean out the plumbing. Don't let it clean out your body's plumbing. (If instead it is the "Tradicional," though, it's drinkable -- that's a puro.)

3. Don't hesitate to pick up a bottle of either Camarena (per my recommendation in the other thread) or Cazadores (which is also an excellent choice for the price) sooner rather than later, just because you have other stuff on the shelf. It doesn't go bad or anything, so there's no harm having it around for awhile. If your local store(s) sometimes put them on sale, grab it/them whenever you can get a bargain. Don't deny yourself other tasting opportunities just because others have foisted other stuff on you!

Just had some Cazadores the other evening. Picked up a 5th for 18 bucks. Not bad at all for under $20, I would drink it again.

I finally picked up a bottle of tequila of my choosing tonight. After wandering up and down the aisle for a good 30 minutes evaluating blancos, I chose this one. My deciding factor was the importer, a company from Lewiston, Maine. I don't live in New England anymore, but I at least wanted to support them in some way. It was $28 for 750ml.

So far, I really like it. Not as peppery as others, and sort of sweet. Still, it has a great flavor and bite. Also very important to me, it goes down nice and smooth. I had a couple shots at room temperature, right out of the bottle. This is my preferred way to enjoy tequila.

Update on the El Charro. After some more time with it, the wife and I give it a thumbs down.

When I have just one shot, I get tired. The wife gets bad headaches. We thought maybe it was coincidence, so we both had a shot the next evening to see what would happen. The next morning, I felt like I had been out drinking all night and the wife had a terrible headache. We have about half the bottle left, which will probably end up getting dumped down the drain. I wouldn't want to serve this to guests and have them feeling the same way.

All the Patron guys should should get them a bottle of this stuff. Its way smoother, has a better flavor and costs less. Patron isn't great tequila, and is over priced.

I don't believe there is a better tasting spirit than Tequila or Mezcal.

Never tried 'Patron' and after reading some of your comments probably never will.
The one I like is Don Julio, i buy it across the border and bring it to Texas.

I read this thread last Friday and last night felt that I needed to drink some tequila despite the fact that I rarely drink. So last night I picked up a bottle of Camarena, I chose the blanco. I also decided to get all the other crap I need for margaritas and some taco bell. Had me a margarita while I ate my taco bell then the wife's friend and I did some shots and finished it off with a few more margaritas. being that I don't generally drink, let alone tequila I can't really compare it to anything else, however the friend, who loves tequila, said it was really good.

I know it got me a great kind of drunk and the side effects this morning are mild, so that's something to keep in mind. I'll give it some proper treatment at a later date, straight or on ice, to really get a feel for it.

Local liquor stores on carry it in Blanco and Reposado so I may pick up the Reposado some time.
