For Tequila Lovers

At this point, I am trying to determine which I do prefer....blanco, reposado, anejo, etc. Once I nail down my preference there, I will start exploring which is best inside that category. So far for me, blanco is leading the way.

That being said, you make some good points about differences within a brand. Oh well, I suppose I need to continue my research. Darn! :D

Yeah, sorry I had to be the bearer of the bad news, but I'm afraid you're gonna have to do A LOT more research....

BTW, it isn't necessarily the case that you have to come to a decision about which category you prefer in a general sense. There's no reason you can't like all of them at different times in different contexts -- or just when you're in different moods. For example, you might enjoy a bright snappy blanco at Happy Hour, but a dark, rich anejo after a fine meal or in front of the fireplace on a cold winter night. As a coffee guy, you probably prefer something mellow and smooth on some occasions, and something more bold and full-flavored at other times, right?

We didn't make it to the tequila bar, but I had a Don Julio reposado and a Patron blanco Saturday night. I had them with no ice and room temperature. I am most definitely a blanco guy.

The Patron blanco was smooth and fresh tasting. I finished it before I even realized it was gone. Good to the last drop. I could see myself sipping this now and then. It had a cool feeling as it went down and was pleasant to the nose.

The Don Julio was too aggressive tasting for me. It smelled strongly and really took over as I swallowed. It wasn't bad tequila, just too bold for me I suppose.
We've probably got the same preference when it comes to tequila and I think you're going to like Don Julio 1942. ;)

So, snowed in from my gig. ..... Best $50 bottle around IMO. Got this one for just over $40....:-)
Yummy yummy yum yum.

So I finally dove in and tried 1 of my tequilas neat. I forgot that I had purchased some whisky stones last year, so I popped 3 into a rocks glass and poured myself some of my Don Julio 1942. The stones gave it just enough chill for me, and I've got to say, it's altogether different than drinking bourbon. Very smooth neat, with little burn, an a mild oily mouthfeel after. Next up will be the Cabo Reposado. I must do more research!

I drink mine neat but not chilled. I love it. After you are used to drinking tequila it is hard to drink whiskey or bourbon because of the sweetness.

Any mescal fans?? Yikes.

No posts for almost a month -- time to revive this thread!

So FWIW, here's the latest tequila news from my neck of the woods: The liquor store most convenient to me just started stocking again, after a hiatus, the big 1.75L bottles of 1800 "Silver" (blanco) -- at a sale price of $35.95. That's a heckuva deal, considering that a 750ml model of the same stuff is usually $29.95, or $25.95 when on sale. At this big-bottle sale price, it's easily the cheapest (per volume) puro that I can buy around here -- moreso than even Lunazul. It's not great stuff, but at that price I couldn't pass it up.

How does the taste compare to Lunazul?

I am still wading my way through the world of blancos. I tried a couple reposados recently, but they just don't do it for me like a smooth shot of a blanco does.

I found this a Costco the other day. Has anyone else tried it?

I haven't had the Lunazul for awhile, so it's hard for me to say from memory. Now that I have a bottle of 1800 on the shelf, I should pick up some Lunazul and do a side-by-side. Will report back here when I do. (What a guy, huh? Taking one for the team!)

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has tried the Kah brand -- the one in the skull bottles. I've deliberately avoided
letting myself get sucked in just because of the cool bottle. It seems to get good reviews around the interwebs, though: Lots of people say they bought it because of the bottle, but then were pleasantly surprised to find that the juice was worthy of the presentation. Still, I wonder whether the cool-bottle effect might bias people's judgments a bit. I'd really like to see how it stands up in a "blind" tasting.
