I've seen some scary old basses from the old Soviet Union that sound right up your alley. Some look cool, actually, but you can find them on eBay, really beat to hell. Probably won't get more frustrating than one of those.

Truth. Anyone would have been better than Edge. And yes, anything Jack touches is pure gold. He is very good at what he does.

Not really going for anything "musical", as you say, with it. I mean, yes, I will play, repair and all that good stuff but its to teach me to control my anger and my anxieties. I'm just using something I know I'll never stop doing to help me concentrate on fixing emotions.

Wow. That thing looks slick. The body style is awesome, imo. And at only $1050, you can buy one for you and one for me. ;) Much too pricey for this venture, dude. It does remind me of Jack's old one.

Those are definitely different. What's up with no 4s? 1, 2, 3, 5. What happened? I guess body mass and 4 strings aren't punk enough. ;) The punk 3bass was crazy looking. The little one string neck on the bottom made me laugh. :)

I've picked up a few different "Mondial" models from their line. You can have one for $300 if you are patient. I've had a blue, green, and white one. They are really cool looking, IMO. Humbucker + Piezo, one type is semi-hollow and the other is solid ("Sportster")




Here's one, the white Mondial with the "F" hole.


I would have kept one if I wasn't a revolving door for basses. Guess that's what happens when you're $30k in school debt.

As others have posted, Id look for a 40-80ish$ CL beater. A beat up Ibanez or squire may be too nice for your purpose, but the market supports them if you ever decide to upgrade/mod or sell it. Also if you decide to do any work like fret leveling or refinishing with bad results, you could part it out and most likely break even.

Probably string it with half rounds or flats at first. Steels used to "upset" me. I found that I play the "smoothest" with stiffer steel strings and low action. If I get heavy handed, the sound surely shows it, but when I need to blend in an curb some of the "presence" it requires a very light touch that I can only pull off when Im very calm.

Im interested in this, keep us up on how this works for you.

I'm picking up what you're laying down - just because I can't relate doesn't mean I can't understand and appreciate. Have you considered building one? A neck lathed from a 2x4 or just taken off an old POS, and a body routed from a stair tread? Single coil guitar pickups? Hell, a guitar bridge?

You know, that's probably what I'll have to do. Build up from a beater or kit, that is. I've had good comments on basses but the only thing to come kind of close has been the bamboo bass. If I had the tools and machines I would have been building a long time ago. Thanks for the understanding and slightly humours response. :) cheers

That's a good idea about the strings. Didn't think of something like that. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm most definitely going to sting it up with half flats. :) cheers
