The two pickups on that Mondial are one for the magnetic pickup and one for the piezo pickup. Looks really cool, and not too awfully pricey... but to pricey to buy to mod imo.

Curmei is dead on. The guitar your looking for is a Maria made in the former Soviet Union. Is good bass.

I wish I would of read the tread before posting that. It really has nothing to do with what you were looking for. But yes, it really it Legos, 1500 of them. The magic of eBay is awesome!

Ibanez GIO basses are pretty crap-tastic IME. The one I have the already bad sounding pre-amp died 7 months in, the tuners won't hold for more than an hour, the saddles sink with vigorous playing and the frets started sprouting pretty quick.
It's now fretless, a P instead of PJ, passive with just a volume, a pot that does nothing, a strat jack plate installed to cover the two holes that were being left empty, and a refinish. I use it for outdoor gigs in questionable/freezing balls weather. Might make this thing a frankenstein and use whatever cheap parts show up on CL over the summer just to see how odd this thing can get and still be a functional instrument.

Or you could do what I did and just buy a used Squier Bronco for $75. The foundation is pure Fender so you can change things easily to get whatever you want. Put lollipop tuners on it, put a darkstar bass or a strat lipstick guitar pickup in it, put a stingray preamp in it, reshape the headstock to make it unique, or just keep it as is. It's not a bad bass out of the box and is very cheap and easy to make a good and unique bass out of. And at the end of the day if you don't like it, you're out about $75 (about what a nice set of strings would cost).

I've been checking just about everything everyone else is suggesting and there all great but I think I'll follow up on something like the bronco. Glad to be of help. When you get a chance check out the Squier Mod threads on TB. Tons of neat personalization going on there. The thing I love most about the Bronco is the ability to put a guitar pickup in it. You don't need to stay with a bass pickup, you can play with tons of guitar options that just drop in without mods vs any other bass that would require re-routing.
Some of the guitar pickups give really cool sounding bass output (i.e. SD hotrails, GFS lipsticks, Texas strats, etc.) you are not limited at all to just bass pickups on this bass and in fact the pickup that comes with it is a standard 6 pole strat guitar pickup, so lining up poles and strings isn't even necessary. Have fun!
I've seen some pretty crappy Mexican plastic basses, but I can't remember who makes 'em. Real colorful though; like a pinata!
