getting some kind of routine into a tear down/load out is probably the only way to avoid loss......a list of what goes where taped into the lid of each case allows an at a glance count, then a larger piece count for the amps and cases, and the ever needed dummy check, just to make sure nothing was forgotten before you drive away.....I'm so frickin paranoid about forgetting my bass that after I load it and start driving down the road, I end up reaching behind me and unzipping the case and feeling to make suure the bass is still in the case. Considering that without the bass, the case would weigh hardly anything it's pretty obvious when I load that the bass is in there. But like I said, I'm paranoid. I made a checklist once and memorized that puppy.
I'm also the person who doesn't let anyone help me put everything away after the gig... each cable/cord goes into a certain place (power with power, lights with lights, guitar/speaker either into gig bag or into cable briefcase)..... I don't like the "open the box and not see the cable" feeling.
My worst thing I've done so far (knock on wood) is now actually pretty funny. Get to a gig, one of the first with my first band. We're playing a party for a politician at election time outside of a clubhouse. I get there early as usual..... Back then I didn't carry a purse and kept my keys in my pocket. That night I was wearing a skirt (no pockets). After sitting in my truck for a while I got up to go look at power outlet situation... being the paranoid person I am I lock the truck. Come back to the truck and oh boy......sinking feeling. Keys sitting on the front seat, ALL of my gear in the truck.
Luckily my at the time bf worked near the gig and hadn't gone to work....also luckily I had my phone in my hand. Panicked phone call to band, panicked phone call to bf. Bf breaks into my house on the way to work and gets my spare truck key, brings it to gig. I end up setting up 20 minutes late-worked out ok cause that's when policitian started talking.
Now I am completely paranoid about locking my keys in my truck!!! I check at least twice for them in my hand or in my sight before shutting the door. I also now have AAA. Still trying to figure out where I could put a spare key where it wouldn't bounce off or be obvious. Also now have spare keys at work and my house (and a spare house key hidden outside). Gah.
It was so bad my band didn't make that much fun of me, and I'm usually fair game for teasing.....
*goes off to check her bass*
