Forum lingo, slang, and the like

If we're including definitions, I'll include mine...

"Meev" (verb) - To present among forum seniors to be well-versed in TB lore, despite not even being a member of TB at the time of said lore. The term refers to ex-member Meev, who was ultimately ridiculed and shunned away for consistently displaying such behavior.

I dunno about that. I read through old forums with MEEV in them and he was a paying member it seems. I also came across other forums where people seemed to have missed him and wanted to make contact again.

It's odd. I keep reading this post and yet the author's user name still doesn't say "Meev" no matter how much I expect it to.

What I don't like, or really just makes me skip threads, is when people just make up their own acronyms that are not common internet lingo, without first using the whole phrase once so people get it.

Examples would be QOTSA for the band Queens of the Stone Age.

Or some thread a little while back with DWTS. Turned out to be something about the TV show Dancing With The Stars.

It would be nice if people would use the whole written out term once first.

Thank You,

Will - Former member of SPEBSQUSA

QOTSA has been abbreviated to QOTSA for years. Do you have the same issues with RHCP or RATM for example?

It took a little to figure out those as well. I suppose it would've made more sense to leave QOTSA out of my post and just reference the thread with DWTS in the title, and maybe find another example or two.

Even just today, in the "food truck hurts family business" thread, people out of nowhere just started calling father in law FIL and brick & mortar B&M, but at least the terms were used in whole at least once before that so you could figure it out.

Maybe it's just because I'm an alright typist, schooled in the proper way, and can just write out the words in about the same time it takes to hit "shift" and abbreviate them.

That stuff must be a by product of the text messaging culture.

He may have been a paying member (I forget). I was just making the point that when he was just a few weeks or months in, he was the mecca of TB, in his own mind.

I was including a lot of qualifiers though, not claiming to be correct.

No no, I wasn't claiming you are Meev-ish!

I took me a while to figure out LARS and ISHST.

Like A Rolling Stone

I Saw Her Standing There

The names had been mentioned earlier in the thread, and it dawned one me.

Sometimes I'll abbreviate No Particular Place To Go NPPTG in my notes, and weeks later I'll see it and wonder, "What the hell is that?"

Im not a fan of the ban names abbreviated. Throws me at first.

BTBAM - Between the buried and me
IWABO - Iwrestledabearonce
FFDP - Five finger death punch
EODM - Eagles of Death Metal "hate them by the way"

I would rather use one word in their name in full. Between, punch, eagles... not all these crazy initials.

Mea Culpa .
But it's always the same two from me - FCOL GAT- For crying out loud get a teacher.

TTFN - ta ta for now.

A mark is a confidence man's slang for "sucker". Where on TB did you come across that? There are no con men here.
Mark might simply be a name. Mark Wilson comes to mind first.
