Four string fretless acoustic/electric (chambered)

More brain streaming - I went ahead and ordered the K&K Preamp. I bet the buffer will work, but as I was messing around in the studio trying out different boxes I realized how nice it is to have volume and tone control with me. The preamp is small and made to clip onto a belt (or strap). It was $100 and I already have $10 sunk into the buffer parts, but it's simple and it will work.

Now onto the top, I need to figure out the right place for bracing and how to install it through the sound hole.
 
On the top: the deformation happens pretty much around the sound hole mostly on the left hand side (looking from the front), but also on the lower side. It looks sort of like a swimming pool where the sound hole is the lowest point. I read articles about bracing and it seemed the biggest area to worry about was on top of the sound hole. There is only an inch or so between the sound hole and the wood I left for the neck pocket, I am getting zero deflection there. It's really strange where the deformation is happening as the bridge is sitting almost on top of the cross in the bridging, so this deformation appears to be twisting the bracing, which doesn't seem possible. Perhaps I should have left it full sized instead of scalloping and thinning it so aggressively. I tried it out with all four strings before I glued it up and I saw no movement, I thought I had it more than covered.

I had to detension the strings as it seemed every time I picked it up all four were off by a half tone - it wasn't just string stretching, it was top deforming causing it to go flat. Not good.

Last night I was looking at it and I thought of the easiest (though probably sonically worst) solution - just put a short piece of wood between the top and the back of the bass. I figured I can't really play it plugged in until I get my buffer made or the preamp comes in, so with this in place at least I could play it acoustically. I cut a piece of bracing that's just exactly the right size and put it in last night, it's just resting in there, no glue.

As expected it pretty much stopped the top from deflecting. I don't notice a big change to the sound acoustically, again this instrument is not that loud when not plugged in, it's louder than an electric bass, but not much louder. I figured I pretty much killed the vibration on the top and therefore I didn't expect anything to be coming out of the K&K system. I plugged it in to confirm that - it actually sounds more like an acoustic instrument when it's plugged in! I don't notice any difference in the volume it produces through the amp, but the tone is entirely different and better. It kind of sounds like I turned off the neck pickup, mwah is much improved.

I know in violins they have a sound post that they use to tune the sound, I guess that's kind of what this is. I need to move it back just a bit so it's not as visible from the front, but unless I see something else go wrong here, I think this is how I will solve my top problem. There is still a slight bit of deformation right in front of the bridge, but even that small amount should be reduced when I move the post back a bit.

I'm going to try putting a shorter sound post directly under the bracing and see what that does. It would be less noticeable and I think it would support the whole top a bit better. I'll get some sound clips once I get the preamp, the bass frequency roll off is significant without something that can handle the high impedance.
 
Was there not a block under the bridge? I thought in the earlier pictures you had a block and string through holes. Looking at how that area cupped a little it may be partial to the problem you have with the strings being unequal in volume. Less pressure on the center of the piezo strip than the outside
 
There is a block where the strings come up through, but I shortened it so it does not touch the top of the guitar at all (there's a 1/2" or so gap between the top of the block and the top). The bridging underneath is an x with an additional 3" piece coming straight down between the 2nd and 3rd string. I was really concerned that having the top glued to that block would keep it from vibrating and make the pickup useless.

The K&K system doesn't use a piezo strip, it's 2 transducers (I presume there are just piezos inside those transducers, but I don't know for sure). They are metal discs about the size of a dime and they are CA glued underneath the bridge with one in between the first and second string and one between the third and fourth string. K&K literature states that this is a better way to get sound from an acoustic instrument as the piezo is not under pressure like it would be with a strip in between the bridge and the top plate.

If I plug this into a preamp with adjustable impedance the E string gets louder and louder the higher I set that impedance. The max on the preamp is 3K ohms and the K&K system is presenting 3M ohms, so even all the way up the E string is still attenuated. I think once I get the K&K preamp I should be ok (hopefully!).
 
My last adjustment is the string saddles. I have to pull the ebony out to make adjustments, so I have to loosen all the strings a lot to get it out, which is tiresome. My action is just a little bit higher than I want it to be, but I'm a bit paranoid about going to go too low (I can't come back up!). I now see the advantage of individually adjustable string saddles ;).

My plan is to get the action perfect then use this bridge as a template to make another one - this one has a small piece of walnut in the middle, which I think looks good, but due to where it is in the bridge it brings attention to the fact that the bridge is off center. I think if I widen that walnut it will hide it a bit.

I've played it a ton in the last 24 hours, I'm liking it a lot. It's the most expressive bass I've played with bends and slides producing really excellent effects. I'll get some recordings as soon as I get the preamp, or maybe I'll do an acoustic recording today.
 
I guess I am done with this build - I got the action where I want it (in fact if I had individual string adjustment I'd bring one or two of them up just a touch). I'll use this bridge as a template for the new one and leave a bit more on the G and A strings. The intonation is perfect on the A, D and G strings, the E is a bit off, but it is a fretless, so adjustments can be made. The way the bridge is off I can't compensate enough with the breakover on the ebony, oh well, nothing I can do about that. Here's the bridge - the angle of the shot makes some things look more crooked and some less, it's definitely off a bit.

I guess this will be the last post on this thread until I get the preamp. I'm pretty happy with how this came out, if I had to do it over again, I'd definitely do a few things differently, but that's expected if you're doing something for the first time. I've got plans for my next one, but it will have to wait until the winter. I have to cut a new string saddle, but I guess that's the only thing that will change going forward (notice the A string is a bit off).
